Well, here's the, um, (very) long and short of it: 17 claims to
defining BOOBY-HUT.

Vote for two (2), publicly, by direct reply to this message. Choose
those you think most likely to have come from an actual dictionary
(one, I assure you, did). You may vote even if you didn't submit one
of the items below--even if you just joined the game now and weren't
here for the first part of the round.

If by some chance you realize that you recognize the real definition,
you may NOT vote and should notify me by private e-mail.

Deadline for voting: Saturday, 19 September, 9 a.m.; that's crack of
dawn west of here; 1 p.m. for our friends in England and 2 p.m. in the
Netherlands; and 11 p.m. for the folks in Melbourne.

1. in computer science, a class of erasure codes with the property
that a potentially limitless sequence of encoding symbols can
be generated from a given set of source symbols such that the original
source symbols can be recovered from any subset of the encoding
symbols of size equal to or only slightly larger than the number of
source symbols.

2. a box-like structure or cupola above the caboose that allows
observation of the whole train when in motion.

3. a seaside hatchery particularly designed to accommodate various
members of the avian genus _Sula_.

4. a small triangular sail extending from the head of the foremast.

5. a children's outdoor game similar to hide and seek.

6. a carriage body put upon sleigh runners.

10. _Obs._ some sort of container.

11. the Eurasian brown partridge.

12. a bird-watching hide. [sl.]

13. house of corrections; jail.

14. a brothel. [naval slang]

I like 2, but I think my vote will have to go to 15 and 16, please.

Best wishes,
Tim B.

I'll go for the moving containers = that was going to include #2 but I can't
see it going under a bridge that easily so I'll go with #6 and #15 please

I'm trying to avoid the obvious, but this is tough! I love "a bra," but, again...

I "guess" I'm just going to have to..."guess":

<< 3. a seaside hatchery particularly designed to accommodate
<< various
<< members of the avian genus _Sula_.

<< 11. the Eurasian brown partridge.

I don't think I've seen a more unlikely lot, so I'll choose the highly
implausible:

10. _Obs._ some sort of container.
and
17. a fire pit.

I'll join the crowd voting for 2 (hello new dealer) and tack on 8 for
good measure.
