I can vouch for VueScan. The guy has maintained it for years, and it does a creditable job with old Epson scanners. If you can find a good driver from the scan maker, it is likely to have more functions, but VueScan is very good otherwise.

David,

VueScan looks promising, but as I have a driver for my brother multifunction that works, I can't justify the cost of using a 3rd party utility, no matter how well done.

Kathleen,

Never had an epson scanner... have this multifunction Brother right now and it works nicely, but the software is bloatware... when my computer loads, this is the last thing up and it is sloooowwww.

VueScan works with many or most scanners. This page lists the supported Brother models (http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/vuescan.htm#brother). It also mentions that for Windows, the WIA driver from the manufacturer is required.

Kathleen,

Well it has my multifunction (MFC-7420), but can't justify the cost and, although slow, the Brother software works well.

I once had an unsupported Epson, and VueScan came in handy then.

Kathleen,

If need comes, I'll remember this conversation!
