Got to take in my first game at the new Yankees Stadium tonight -- Yanks 5, White Sox 2 in 10 innings -- with a five-year-old and eight-year-old who were also at THEIR first game at Yankee Stadium (or any big league stadium for that matter).

I have to say... I was not expecting to like it as much as I did. But the fact is, it's gorgeous. I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. And this response is even after sitting there most of the time in the rain (bad enough to be mildly uncomfortable, not bad enough to call the game -- see photo below).

It does lack the tradition of the old Yankee Stadium, but it adds a lot of class.

I'm sold. I like it.

You were there in the rain and saw Cano's walk off homer? Not bad!!

I guess we both have to get back to the new Stadium with better weather. We both got rained on. Where were your seats?

Judy,

Congrats and a walk off win too. Couldn't be better. The best pitchers on both squads and our relief corp was outstanding.

There are bad seats, but you have to google them to avoid them.

I was in the same general area on the third base side. I thought that the only "bad" seats would be the left field bleachers. I hope I can see the place in sunshine next year.

I think the new Stadium will be seeing playoff baseball this year!

I was in the same general area on the third base side.I had a lot of fun there with the camera... Finally got these shots processed:

I was able to turn six hand-held shots into this panorama (click the image to see it bigger):

It's awfully hard to argue with a baseball game that starts the real action with a home run by one of your favorite players. Watching Derek Jeter swing for the fences and blast a first inning home run was a fantastic way for the boys to begin what we can all hope will be a lifelong love of baseball.

Got a few other action shots during the game... Mark Teixeria swinging away...

http://photos.jgrussell.com/photos/634023229_xak4J-O.jpg

... CC Sabathia with yet another strike...

http://photos.jgrussell.com/photos/634023267_d5Sih-O.jpg

... but with the rain continuing to fall and the very real chance of a rainout looming at any moment, all I really wanted out of the entire game was to get to the middle of the third inning. I know my sister-in-law kept wondering why I kept saying I would be perfectly happy if we could just get in three innings in the game (she knows perfectly well you need five for a legal game)... but she found out during the middle of the third inning when I told the boys to make sure they watched the left-center field video board...

http://photos.jgrussell.com/photos/634023297_Tvefo-O.jpg

At that point I basically sat back and enjoyed the game (5-2 Yankees with a three-run walk-off home run by Robinson Cano in the bottom of the 10th!!) and brought the camera out from under the poncho I was wearing only rarely... such as for the seventh inning groundskeepers...

Wonderful pictures! Do you still use Neat Image to clean up images? I never can get my pictures to look so sharp.

Wonderful pictures! Do you still use Neat Image to clean up images? I never can get my pictures to look so sharp.I didn't do very much noise reduction with these shots at all -- I used the 70-200 f4 IS lens and that lens is so sharp you can cut yourself on it. Plus I use the Smart Sharpen feature in Photoshop CS4 and that really helps.

<sigh>

I use the same Smart Sharpen function. I guess I should look at a new camera. I'm still using my G3. Still as good as ever, just not as good as what is out there now.

Still as good as ever, just not as good as what is out there now.You are never going to get the image quality out of a point-and-shoot that you can from a dSLR. The new G11 is an excellent camera (no articulating screen), but it will always be fundamentally limited. So don't compare what I'm getting now with the 40D to what you're getting with the G3 -- it's apples and oranges, and I pay the price in price and in heft.

Ooooh, that sensor's going to be so biiiiig!! Are you gonna have to chuck all your lenses?

And..

o What's your favorite site to keep up on these things?

o What would you recommend for the less-obsessed?

o Discuss whether the above is tautology or litotes.

o Drop by room 322 for additional credit, and so I can steal your camera.

-teach

pps.: Is that really a screen on the railing? Neato, or obscene, take your pick.

-blown away

ps.: Molly wants to know where to buy a print of the panorama. And I want it for wallpaper in 16x10. Magnificent stuff.

Ooooh, that sensor's going to be so biiiiig!! Are you gonna have to chuck all your lenses?Fortunately, no. Only two of my five lenses are EF-S, and this is still an APS-C sensor, so I can still use 'em all.

And..
o What's your favorite site to keep up on these things? If'n you're a Canon type, Photography on the Net (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php). If'n you're a Nikon type, Nikonians (http://www.nikonians.org/). If'n you're a fan of some other brand, you're SOL.

o What would you recommend for the less-obsessed?If you want video, then either the Canon Ti1 or the Nikon D5000. If you don't care about video, then the Canon XSi or the Nikon D60.

o Discuss whether the above is tautology or litotes.Yes.

o Drop by room 322 for additional credit, and so I can steal your camera.No.

pps.: Is that really a screen on the railing? Neato, or obscene, take your pick. It's just a glass (or perhaps plastic) screen to keep people from falling over or being hit in the face by balls. Nothing displays on it (at least not that I saw.)

ps.: Molly wants to know where to buy a print of the panorama. And I want it for wallpaper in 16x10. Magnificent stuff. Thanks for the kind words. If you're serious, let me know.

>APS-C sensor

Ah. Thought the 7 was going to be 24x36. So you won't have to go to Popeye camp to get forearms big enough to carry the body, and won't have to change all your lenses.

I'm still amazed that your exquisite stuff is all from APS-C!

I couldn't afford the 1D!!

I'm still amazed that your exquisite stuff is all from APS-C!Thank you sir, but there's really nothing wrong with an APS-C sensor. And the 7D should be even better than the ones I've got! (And yes I will sell one, keeping one for backup, when the 7D arrives.)

It appears that these 16x24mm sensors are capable of an 8 to 9 stop dynamic range (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD90/page22.asp), even at 12 Mpixels.

They can be pretty quiet at ISO 3200 (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/NikonD90/page20.asp), and even usable at ISO 6400.

Bye-bye, Tri-X!
