Sorry for the delay; an earlier commitment took a bit longer than we
figured.

The word is THRAWN. Below, 18 definitions. One is from a dictionary;
the other 17 are not. Your task: to find that genuine one. You have
two votes--two chances--which should be cast publicly, by reply to
this posting.

You may vote even if you didn't submit a definition and/or just jumped
into the game.

Make your choices before the deadline: Tuesday 25 August for North
American players, 11:30 p.m. EDT, and folks to the west can figure it
out; Wednesday 26 August for the others: 4:30 a.m. in England, 5:30
a.m. in the Netherlands, 1:30 p.m. in Melbourne.

I have an uncontrollable impulse to vote for #5; I can't imagine why. And by
the time I got to #8 I was too tired to read the rest.

As usual, I have no clue. Here are my guesses:

<< 2. a soft, thin cloth woven from Chinese or Indian raw silk or an
<< imitation thereof.

<< 13. _Yorkshire dial._ pig swill.

My votes go to:

#5. placed under a spell; bewitched.
#14. _Scot._ twisted, crooked; distorted.
.... they deserve to be right, even if they're not.

(I actually drafted this a while ago, before I read Mike's and Dave's votes,
but I think I'll still stay with No.5 ... it's great!)

Hi Dodi,

The following two defs managed to convince me:

And yes, I did read them all!

Nice graphic effect Dodi - and no doubt even better if my browser
didn't wrap the lines. So I'll take a couple of past participles from
the valley - 8 and 9.

Dodi -

What an interesting range of choices. I'll try -

1. wastage that falls aside when grain is being bound into sheaves;
chaff or leavings after threshing.

and

5. placed under a spell; bewitched.

Thanks,

Chuck

I'm sorry, Nancy, but you missed the deadline by an hour! (I actually
waited half an hour beyond the announced deadline before I compiled the
final report.)

I'm REALLY sorry, in fact. As you've now seen, you lost two points; #14 was
the real def. :-(
