In 1855, 20 years after his visit to the Galapagos Islands aboard the _Beagle_,
Charles Darwin traveled to London to meet the gentlemen of the Philoperisteron
Society to buy pigeons and their skeletons for his research into domestic variation,
later published in 1868 ("The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication").
In 1856, he wrote to the secretary of the society, "I received the Victoria Runt all
safe & fresh, & very much obliged I am for it. I did not write to thank you for it,
as I knew I shd. have to write soon about the Scanderoons. They left the nest a few
days ago, & I will send them off on Wednesday night the 10th, so that they will arrive
about 10 oclock on Thursday 11."
My scandaroon left the nest Saturday morning and arrived with a flurry on Judy Madnick's
porch with the announcement that she had won the deal for round 2025, barely edging out
Scott Crom.
Runners-up in the pigeon races were Russ Heimerson, Chuck Emery, and our long-absent
player Wayne Scott, who almost won with his absent player def.
Meanwhile, I'll go back to reading about tumblers, polands, pouters, fantails and
laughers.
