View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2022 LUKIKO Defs

Tim Lodge
July 19th, 2009, 04:26 AM
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to get to my computer to send a reminder
message yesterday. However, we've still got a good crop of 18 very
varied and believable defs of LUKIKO from most of the regular players.

Vote for TWO definitions, as a public forum message (in reply to this
one), before the deadline of:

18:00 BST on Monday 20th July
17:00 UTC
1:00 PM EDT
10:00 AM PDT
and (I think) 04:00 on Tuesday in Melbourne.

New players are welcome, even if you didn't enter a definition this
round. Don't look in a dictionary. Full rules, if you're curious, are
at http://tinyurl.com/ktw5pq

Uganda.

14: vigorous Philippine evergreen twining liana; grown for spectacular
festoons of green flowers that resemble lobster claws.

15: in a Japanese castle, a floorboard deliberately allowed to squeak

It does sound Japanese, so let's try 7 and 11.

Best wishes,
Tim B.

I was so tempted by the Japanese floorboard, but I'll have to settle for:

#6: secured bag used by a messenger or courier.
or
#13: A levee; the council or parliament of the Buganda people of Uganda.

I'll go with the "small" stuff this time:

<< 7: (_Jap._) a variety of very small, very sweet melon.

<< 17: Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language) name for the
<< Sun Bear
<< (Helarctos malayanus), the world's smallest bear, which is
<< indigenous
<< to that country.

6 and 13 - no good reason but 6 should not have such a strange word
for sure ...

That's quite a list of possibilities. I find the Russian onion very
unlikely on several counts so it's on my vote list. Likewise, 18 is way out
there as well. So on the principle of 'least likely suspects' favored by a
lot of mystery writers, I'll go for:

9 and 18.

I'm not convinced by the Japanese defs. The word would be rukiko. African,
then. 13 and 16.

16 and 17 for me.

So many national/ethnic origins in this round. I'm not buying the
Japanese options; the African instrument has too many votes already;
the Dutch acronym is far too ingenious; I don't trust Philippine/
Phillipine as an adjective; I don't know my Russian onions. But just
possibly it's a Malay word and I don't want to risk offending any
Vodoun players, so I'm casting my votes at 5 and 12.

I'll take the unpopular outcast and the irresistible children's choir
derivation: 1 and 18:
