View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2019 TOTITIVE defs up - vote now

Here they are folks, 16 definitions of TOTITIVE including one that came from
a reputable dictionary. Vote for the two you like best by open reply to this
message.

And for the lurkers (we live in hope - our numbers seem to be declining) -
jump in and try it. Anyone can vote providing you don't actually know the
word from prior knowledge or peeking. Details are in the rules file.

The deadline is Thursday at 2000 UTC, aka 1pm for westcoasters, 4pm for
eastcoasters, 9pm for the British contingent, 10pm for our Dutch friends and
6am on a dark cold Friday morning for me and Millie. I'm generously allowing
a full 36 hours for your vote, possibly a little longer depending when I get
out of bed but don't count on it. Results will follow in due course.

1 capable of being carried; portable

2 A case in early Sanskrit, indicating the recipient of a gift; it is
similar to but not fully identical with the Latin dative case.

3 _Archaic_ Captious; faultfinding.

4 a small dose of medicinal brandy or rum.

5 a fervent abolitionist [sl. obs]

6 _obs_ the plus sign (+)

7 of, like or pertaining to underground water above the water table.

8 where outcome is dependent on small variations in the initial
condition; the butterfly effect

9 countable.

10 a lamp that burns methylated or other spirits instead of oil

11 a drug believed to bestow the ability to recall the distant past and
divine the future.

12 extremely burdensome.

13 perfectly exemplary

14 a number less than another and prime to it

15 Being in a state of physical tiredness combined with mental altertness;
in need of rest but unable to sleep.

16 certain; sure; without doubt

Apologies for the rather odd spacing of the defs, but at least it's
better than my last deal. I'm still not sure about emailing a new
message instead of doing it directly at the site.

Hi Jim,

These two defs caught my attention. Probably for all the wrong reasons...

> 4 a small dose of medicinal brandy or rum.

> 9 countable.

Hi Jim,

My copy of the defs (mailed from Google groups) has no sings of odd spacing
whatsoever.

Best, Hugo

So do I go with those that seem obvious...or seem impossible? <sigh>

Well, here are my choices:

<< 3 _Archaic_ Captious; faultfinding.

<< 10 a lamp that burns methylated or other spirits instead of oil

WHAT "odd spacing"? Looks perfect to me!

Nonplussed. I'll try #4 and #13.

3 and 16 - as I am unsure about whose fault it is.

Dodi and Hugo - when I saw my own message on the Dixonary website the
numbers 1-9 were all indented further than I intended, but when I
received the email version it looks fine, as you say. You probably get
every message by individual email; I opted for the daily digest
version so didn't see it immediately.

4 might cure 15.

The first 9 defs are indented extra for me too, but that's hardly of any
concern!

I'm going for:

3 _Archaic_ Captious; faultfinding.
because it sounds so unlikely
and
6 _obs_ the plus sign (+)
because it sounds so plausible

Jim -

A nice assortment. I'll go for -

3 _Archaic_ Captious; faultfinding.

and

16 certain; sure; without doubt

Thanks,

Chuck
