Hi all,

This is already an amazing round for me. All over the past 1 1/2 days, ! kept being amazed as your definitions came in. What a wondrous selection, and what a diverse variety. Honest, I am glad that I do not have to vote this time!

However, you all do have to vote. So I urge you all to check the 18 definitions below. One of them, believe it or not, is from a real dictionary. The 17 others are all the result of your collective imagination.

Please vote for the two you think the best, for some value (or values) of "good" that seems appropriate to you (such as plausible, politically correct, embarrassing, witty, implausible, or long). You can do this whether or not you have not submitted a definition, and whether or not you have played before. You're not allowed to vote if you KNOW the right answer.

Vote by public reply to this message, by the deadline, which is on thursday July 2nd, 2009 at

23:59 PDT

and on friday, July 3rd 2009 at

1:00 MDT
2:00 CDT
3:00 EDT
7:00 UTC
8:00 BST
and 9:00 CEST for me.

And for those in other time zones, here is once more a link:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=3&month=7&year=2009&hour=7&min=0&sec=0&p1=0

And now, without further ado, on to the definitions!

1. A function in spherical trigonometry, equal to half the complement
of the cosine of an angle.

2. Alcohol legally distilled under a limited licence.

3. In some Polynesian dialects, a woman beyond the age of child-
bearing.

4. [Russ. arshin, of Turkish-Tartar origin; Turk. arshin, arsh[=u]n,
ell, yard.] A Russian measure of length = 2 ft. 4.246 inches.

5. The peculiar luminescence of certain of the scarab beetles, notably
the shining leaf chafers such as the Japanese Beetle and other
garden pests.

6. A shade of brown somewhat darker than sepia but lighter than raw
umber.

7. Marsh-light; also known as jack-o-lantern, ignis fatuus, will o'
the wisp, ghost-light, arshine, corpse candles, fox-fire, etc.

8. A loosely woven fabric with a rough nubby texture.

9. A vaudeville comedy routine.

10. A warning; a danger sign.

11. One who copies monumental brasses by taking rubbings.

12. The asymmetric specular halo created in a telescope by an
improperly ground reflecting mirror.

13. Swinging beam bearing iron spikes.

14. Tall, thin, ungainly.

15. _obs_ A medicinal preparation of arsenic.

16. The aspect of existence on which individuality depends.

17. To bribe with sexual favors.

18. A diamond-patterned earthenware jar produced by the Hopi tribe of
Native Americans (approx. 1300-1700).

Enjoy!

Best, Hugo

I'll take 4 and 10. No reason. Well, a perverse attraction to losing
maybe.

Nancy

Millie

I'll vote for:

7. Marsh-light; also known as jack-o-lantern, ignis fatuus, will o'
the wisp, ghost-light, arshine, corpse candles, fox-fire, etc.

and

14. Tall, thin, ungainly.

Millie Morgan

Dodi Schultz

Indeed a wondrous selection--and not a clue as to which might be real.
I'll venture votes to the authors of #3 and, um, #12.

I'll take the fox-fire in honor of Firefox 3.5, and the halo because it's
just plain cool.

7 and 12 please.

Guerri Stevens

I vote for 7 and 12.

Randomly, #12 and #17, please.

I can't resist 1, and 10 because it seems appropriate.
