View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2017: New word ARSHINE

Hi all,

After casting my votes in the previous round, I tried to look up the true def, but failed. However, I did find this word, which I herreby put forth for your defining pleasure:

*****************
* *
* A R S H I N E *
* *
*****************

And I'll give you no clues whatsoever about capitalization.

Please concoct a fake definition for this word that you think your fellow players will find plausible or entertaining. Preferably both.

Newcomers to the game are always welcome. Your task is to induce the other players to vote for your fake definition rather than the real one. You will find the full rules at http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/coryphaeus/files but they can be summarized thus:
1. Don't look up the word.
2. Make up a fake definition and email it to me. Don't reply to this message, as that will send your fake def to the whole group and make you an easy target of our ridicule.
3. Know the word already? Let me know, again by email. This is called a DQ; it means you can't vote but you can still submit a fake definition to try and fool the others. If there are many DQ's, I'lll call off the round and select a new word.
4. Check back here after the deadline for further instructions.

The deadline for submissions is on Wednesday July 1st 2009 at

12:00 PDT
13:00 MDT
14:00 CDT
15:00 EDT
19:00 UTC
20:00 BST
and 21:00 CEST for me.

Please send your definitions and/or DQ's by email, NOT AS A REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE, but directly to hugo (AT) perFact (DOT) info. To help Coryphaeus deal appropriately with your message, please put "2017" or "ARSHINE" in the subject line.

Best, Hugo

Actually, I don't think we have any Dixonarians in the MDT area. But
if you're going global--how about our two players in Australia? Seems
unfair to exclude them from the roster.

Hi Dodi,

You are so right. But this whole bunch of timezones is entirely generated by
Coryphaeus, and the code in the template used to generate this looks too
daunting for me to even consider touching with a 10 ft. pole.

So with all my apologies to the Aussies, I don't dare to change this
template. Sorry. (And calculating time zones by myself is even harder for
me - remember that I spend my whole life in a country that easily fits in a
fraction of a single time zone!)

Best, Hugo

Oh. Built-in bias. Would it be best, then, for Coryphaeus users to
delete the time text and just give EDT (where a plurality--10--of the
current players are) and your own time??? Seems so unkind to exclude
exactly two of the group. Think how Millie and Jim must feel. :-(

I'd suggest also including UTC, to avoid "American Bias".

I'll do you a modified template, if you like.

As the help says, the $If and $Eval keywords were late additions to the
macro language, shoehorned in as afterthoughts when the simple original
concept was found wanting. And it shows: they are ill-designed and hard to
use. Feel free to seek help with them.

I've been putting multiple timezones in my deadlines for 17 years (even when
using AD) and nobody ever fretted before that Dan would feel excluded
because there wasn't a special deadline for Iraq or Hawaii.

I always accepted, when I lived in SAST, that American players who
thoughtfully provided a deadline in UK time couldn't reasonably be expected
to do the same for me. I'm quite sure that the Australian players understand
that too.
