Well, I managed to survive the round with only minimal hassle thanks to frequent tips from Paul.

The winner of round 2013 is Dave Cunningham, whose definition "_Obs. Dial._ Soft, usu. in "harsh and earsh" (hard and soft). (Cornwall)" earned a natural 7 . That said, Dave contacted me to advise that he's if going off a-cruising this weekend and so would be unavailable to deal without a week's wait.

Therefore, it looks like the deal will fall to Russ Heimerson who is sitting in second place with 4 points, assuming that he agrees to take over Dave's deal and perhaps accept an IOU from Dave.

There were 5 players who are now in the enviable "real winner" slot as runners-up position with 3 points: John Barrs, Scott Crom, Hugo Kornelis, Mike Shefler
and Nancy Shepherdson.

The true definition was 15: "A stubble field." (OED 2nd Edition), which no-one guessed. There was one DQ, the accustomed "BQ" from Johnny Barrs who recognized the Anglo-Saxon derivation.

Congratulations on a well-deserved DQ, Chris!

By the way, I think I should thank you for the 3 points I received. The
definition I submitted to you was:

[sl.] Irish

Somehow (probably because Corypahaes strips line endings), you misunderstood
my intention, ending up putting the "Irish" in the brackets and using the
first wordt of my standard end-of-message greeting as the def. Since my defs
usually attract less than 3 votes, I can only assume that this made it a
better definition than what I originally had in mind...

Best, Hugo

Hugo,

Thanks for the congrats.

<LOL> That is a chuckle about your def. I just went back and checked your
message as Cory interpreted it and it was as you submitted it. All I can
surmise is that when I looked at it, my mind made a connection that wasn't
there and I edited it as it finally appeared. I'm glad it worked out for
the best though.

Chris, congratulations on the D0!

An interesting word. I don't have OED access, but I traced it (after
I'd voted, of course) through Merriam-Webster, and what's fascinating
is that the meaning changed radically. Up through the 1864 M-W, it
meant a plowed field (and even then, it was tagged as obsolete). But
by the 1913 edition, it had become, as you have it, a field of
stubble. (Not sure when the change occurred, exactly, since I don't
have minor editions from the period between those two.)

7 islands in 7 days -- one of those cruises <g>. My first two tries
did not have "Cornwall" in them -- I wonder if that was the key? See
you all next Monday!

when I sent my def "I am probably DQ" as follows :

>- meanwhile I can make a deduction (based on knowledge of AngloSaxon erse)
that it means either a pasture field or a ploughed field - if such appears I
will DQ

Interesting that it should change 1864 to 1913 - This is my DQ message
subsequent to the defs:

>I confirm my DQ re #15 - funnily enough I came across it again quite by
accident this morning when researching something on quail = earsh probably
comes from a translation derived from 'eddische-hen' - earth-hens - birds
of the stubble; like quail
