View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: AHD4 Leaves Bartleby.com

It seems that Bartleby.com no longer hosts my favorite online dictionary.

I had no preference for the AHD4 over other dictionaries, but the
bartleby.com site did allow me to search for words based on a word in the
definition, a feature lacking in many other online dictionaries.

Does anyone know a good online source where I can look for, say, any
definition including "rotten eggs" ?

I don't know if this is even relevant or not.

But I bought my AHD for Windows 3.1 on CD ROM in 1995 and it works on Windows XP and you can click any word in the text of a definition and it will automatically jump to the definition of that other word.

Perhaps these CD install disks are still available at retail for about $10?

I don't know the version of AHD.

The SW had built in pronunciation (audio) and thesaurus.

The fourth (print) edition of AHD was published in 2000.

I haven't memorized the one I have yet, so I'll probably stick with it for a while :D

The one you bought was ver. 3. There was a ver. 4 available on cd several years later. but I am not certain if it is still available. Best to install it using a virtual disk. It uses about 400 megs on a virtual disk.

I have AHD 4 on CD installed on my work laptop and I've used it to support
my Dixonary addiction for several years. Alas, when I tried to install it
on the new Vista machine at home it failed. The folks who published the CD
evidently used the 16-bit version of the installer and Vista 64 won't run
16-bit programs at all. I haven't yet decided whether it's worth installing
virtualbox or not. Probably not so I'm shopping for a newer version.

Hope it's not a hassle!

I ran into a few problems with my new 64-bit laptop -- bought a couple of new programs as a result. While that's kinda' fun <G>, on top of the laptop purchase, I would have preferred *not* to have spent the extra money. Even my security lock didn't fit the new laptop!

My sister bought a 64-bit Acer desktop. I left Windows Vista firewall running cause Zone Alarm I could not find a free 64bit version. Maybe Comodo 64bit free firewall AV would work but not sure it's user friendly enuf.

Bad Advice from Comodo and Loss of Trust

Note this is over 1 year old. I don't know if it's still a current issue?

I opted for PC Security Shield, but it's not free. I had been using it on my old laptop and found it to be quite user-friendly, more so than McAfee. So I'll stick with that...and pay the price for it.

I, too, recently got a new laptop (and am surprised I held out so long on
Vista... I actually like it) which was 64-bit. I wasn't aware of the
software incompatibility of many problems until it was too late. Oh,
well....

On another note, I found my online, searchable AHD4 at
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ . I'm all set for my next deal!

It always seems that way, doesn't it? Who would have thought that the stupid security lock wouldn't fit in the HP laptop slot?! So on top of everything else, I had to buy a new cable.

Do you have bluetooth on your laptop? I was going to get a (bluetooth) wireless external keyboard and mouse, but I'm wondering how reliable they are.

I don't use the wireless keyboard, etc. because I don't want to deal
with batteries. But I have many friends who enjoy them with no problems.

My new toy has Bluetooth built in and I got the Bluetooth mouse and keyboard
with it. My only complaint on the keyboard is that it will go to 'sleep'
after a period of non-use, I'm sure a battery conservation measure. That
causes a little bit of a lag when sitting down and logging in after being
away for awhile. The keyboard retains keystrokes until the Bluetooth kicks
in so there's no loss of characters but it's a little disconcerting to see
yourself typing away ahead of the characters appearing on the screen. I've
not noticed the same thing with the mouse so I think it must activate more
quickly.

So far the only incompatibility I've found with 64-bit Windows is 16-bit
programs (which I think also impacts the 32-bit version of Vista) and the
Adobe flash player that doesn't work with the 64-bit version of Internet
Explorer. Of course the stock setup has both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions
of IE installed so I just use the 32-bit version for virtually everything.
The 16-bit program problem has so far only occurred with a couple of
software packages that still use the old (free) version of Installshield
which was 16-bit. I would think that most of those would be long gone by
now and sure enough, the only program I've had trouble with is the AHD4
package which I bought a long time ago so I can't complain too much.

When I had a wireless mouse many years ago, I was changing the batteries every two weeks. That was before they would "go to sleep" when not being used. I guess the technology has changed.

Same here.

<< mouse and keyboard
<< with it.

The Dell I was supposed to get (but they couldn't make delivery within 30 days and we were going away, so I had to cancel) had a "matching" keyboard and mouse at a reasonable price. I've read about the "sluggishness" of the keyboard, and I'm a fast typist. So I think I may forget the keyboard but perhaps try the mouse.

<< Of course the stock setup has both the 32-bit and

And, again, same here. Roboform is not yet compatible with a 64-bit system, so that helped me make the decision to just stick with the 32-bit IE version.

I have only one incompatibility, but it's a big one. Cisco's VPN router
software (which I need to remotely log in to my company's intranet) doesn't
have a 64 bit software. I have to use my old laptop for that, until they
find a 64-bit solution (which they're working on with a target completion
date of last month).
