is there an easy way to clear out the junk in the local settings\temp folder on XP, i.e. besides windows explorer or such?

You could write batch file to do it, or use CCleaner.

CCleaner.

I second that recommendation. You can download it here (http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html). I would get the one without Yahoo Toolbar included, which is what is in the links under "Download" as opposed to the other links that are under "Other available".

Run CCleaner. The cleaner section should be open. Don't set anything that is not already on by default and you should be fine. Click "run cleaner". That's it. It only takes a second.

OTOH, I wonder if it's really worth cleaning more than once a year?

Mine had about 700 files and folders totaling about 100MB, but I had 40GB free.
Seems that it would not have hurt disk I/O performance much?

P.S. Seems like my old 1994 60Mhz Pentium I Win 3.1 PC with 420MB HD was just as fast tho

OTOH, I wonder if it's really worth cleaning more than once a year?
I'd run it before defragging.
