View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 2009: ZOL [Results]

The outcome has not really been in doubt for 24 hours.
The winner of round 2009 is Tony Abell, whose definition "a
Persian coin of the 5th to 7th centuries" earned a natural 9.

Hugo Kornelis takes coveted second place with 6 points.
Guerri Stevens is runner-up with 5 points.

And nobody figured out that zol is a common (= in my
active vocabulary) South African word for
joint. In the latest wordlist revision, zol has become an
acceptable Scrabble word (except in North America where
there is a shorter wordlist). But it isn't to be found in
W3, nor in OED Online yet.

The true definition was 3: "a hand-rolled marijuana
cigarette" (DSAE), which no-one guessed.

Ety in full:

[Unkn.; the word zol in the sense of 'marijuana cigarette' was recorded in Mexico in the 1950s (see article by H. Braddy in American Speech Vol.30 No.2, May 1955, p.88) but it is not known what the relationship is between that word and this.]
