Actually, AARP itself is not an insurance company (unless they recently took over the business directly). They just SEEM like one because they licensed the name to another company (Aetna for the health insurance).

Toni, I know AARP isn't officially an insurance company. It's just that
most of what AARP seems to do is sell insurance. And lobby.

*Aetna*? AARP's Medigap carrier is United HealthCare. Are you saying
that's Aetna under another name?

yeah... they waste a LOT of paper on me 'cause I don't even have a car.
But I don't get the medical ads because I'm in a "bad" ZIP code (I think they haven't updated their records lately... my ZIP went from bottom 10% to top 10% in 5 years)

I kinda like their lobbying -- what I REALLY hated was AAA (back when I had a car). They were SO anti-mass-transit!!

Toni, you didn't answer my question about AARP. You had said that they
licensed Aetna to use their name--but AARP's Medigap carrier is actually
United HealthCare? Are UHC and Aetna one and the same?

Hardly. United trades on the NYSE under the symbol UNH. Its two major
competitors trade under their own symbols:

Related Companies: UNH

Sector: Healthcare Industry: Health Services

Actually, Aetna is the carrier for the under-65 set (like me). At least that's what I see when I go to the site. But when I put in my ZIP, it's not available.

Didn't look at Medigap. They seem to work with a whole lot of insurance carriers.

Toni, you didn't answer my question about AARP. You had said that they
licensed Aetna to use their name--but AARP's Medigap carrier is actually
United HealthCare? Are UHC and Aetna one and the same?I am quite sure that AARP’s Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D coverage comes from United Healthcare, not Aetna. (If those two have any relationship, it would have to be recent, but I believe they are competitors, not collaborators.)

Toni, "medigap" isn't a company. It's a term for any private insurance
designed to kick in at the point, in the coverage of a particular
service or covered item, where Medicare draws the dollar line. AARP,
among others, offers such insurance; their carrier is United HealthCare.

Of course it's not a company! Sorry if my capitalisation implied that. I'm well aware of what it is. Just seemed like if Medicare is capitalized, then so should Medigap! Your mileage obviously varies. Shall we consult Wm. Safire?
