Some are speculating that Michelle Bachmann is campaigning to replace Sara Palin as the darling of SNL.

At any rate, on Monday night, after having sagely observed earlier in the day that swine flu always seemed to be connected with "Democrat presidents," since the 1976 outbreak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swine_influenza#1976_U.S._outbreak) took place, she said, on Jimmy Carter's watch, Bachmann took to the House floor to demonstrate once again her impressive command of American history, explaining how FDR caused the Great Depression in 1929. The recession he had to deal with, she said, was not as bad as the one Calvin Coolidge had to deal with in the early 1920s, but FDR turned recession into depression and gave the American people 10 years of misery by applying just the opposite of Coolidge's successful formula of lower taxes and little or no regulation: "the Hoot-Smalley Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoot-Hawley_Tariff_Act), which was a tremendous burden on tariff restrictions; trade barriers; and the regulatory burden; and tax barriers...".

Bachmann isn’t as amusing as Palin, and not even as smart. SNL has standards, after all.

This is my 50th high school reunion year, and there is a web site with short biographies. Turns out one of my classmates is Todd Palin’s mother. I am not going, but almost wish I were, just out of curiosity. She comments in her bio that she has recently had to learn to watch what she says. I guess so!

It is not only the anniversary of our graduation but of Alaska statehood — we were the first Anchorage high class to graduate after it was granted.

You did note, of course, that the swine flu outbreak in 1976 was BEFORE the 1976 election and, therefore, the President was a Republican named Ford...
