I won't attempt to comment on this.
Except to say that I have relied on free AV such as AVG on my Win XP and Avast! on my Win 98.
And I have added ThreatFire from PCTOOLS to provide protection against zero-day threats (free software). PCTOOLS bought by Symantec/Norton in 2008.
However, I figured somebody might be interested in these reviews.
