My wistful hopes for a D0 went out the window with the very first vote
cast, when Nancy Shepherdson zeroed in on the real def, #16, the Scots
"alert and quick to respond." Seemed awfully farfetched to me, but clearly
not to four more of you; Tony Abell, Johnny Barrs, Scott Crom, and Toni
Savage also got it.

With somewhat similar defs, Tony (#18, "a wedge, block, or plug") and Toni
(#10, "a small piece of wood or shim") went on to tie for high scorer, with
a total of 7 points each. Tony with a Y, who's slightly ahead in the
rolling scores, takes the deal for Round 1998.
