View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: More bad news

I've just received the sad word that Marijke van Gans died today.

Marijke had not been feeling well and, knowing that I'm in--as she put
it--"the medical writing trade," she'd been sending along reports on her
various symptoms she'd been experiencing over the past few weeks along with
the conflicting diagnoses she'd been receiving from assorted GPs and
consultants. When I last heard from her, exactly two weeks ago,
corticosteroids had her feeling much better while she awaited diagnosis,
which apparently included consideration of a possible malignancy.

Now, suddenly, she's gone.

The news came from a close friend of hers who has access to Marijke's
computer and who had evidently been asked, should such an event occur, to
spread the word to significant others. Those included the Dixonary group.

The friend's name is Hannie van Belle, and she can be reached at Marijke's
address (gmarijke (AT) gmail (DOT) com).

That is truly sad to hear. I had envisioned Marijke as a fairly young
person, so it's hard to believe this could happen so quickly!

That is sad, Dodi; she'll be missed. Thanks for letting us know.

Best wishes,

This is sad news indeed.

Like Guerri, I had imagined Marijke to be young, and at full health. So the
news of her death comes as quite a shock.

I'll miss her...

Best, Hugo

dear friends of Marijke,
Marijke has lived for 53
years, she would have been 54 by 1 november.
She really was forever young, i am glad
she appeared like that through her communications.
-- She tried very hard not to let anything
get her down. The cancer was too strong though.

--Regards, Marijke i can in future be reached at
bluebell (AT) xs4all (DOT) nl, i will try and keep this computer switched on for
the next few days

As I've been told during my own cancer battle, the younger you are, the worse it can be. I was lucky to be older.

As far as I can figure out, Guerri, from a comment (unrelated to her
current illness) she made during our correspondence, she was a little over
50. Yes, she recently earned her Ph.D., but she had apparently decided to
go after that only many years after getting her earlier degree.

Hannie -

I'm very sad to hear this. She was a stimulating member of our group
and will be missed. Her unexpected departure is quite a shock. Thank
you for posting her website URL. I was surprised to find we had more in
common than I knew.

I'm sorry also for your loss,

Dodi, thank you for telling us about Marijke's death.

Some eight years ago I had an extensive email correspondence with
her. She and I were both interested in ways to keep track of the
words dealt in Dixonary, and she developed some wonderful .BAT
files (for use in DOS) that sorted, combined, and did all sorts of
tricks.

Not only did I like her, but also had great respect and admiration
for her computer skills. She will be missed.

I think I echo many of the thoughts already expressed here. Admiration for
Marijke's skills, appreciation of her enthusiastic participation in our
game, and a sense of loss for someone who, although I've never met, has
impacted my life in positive, albeit small, ways. She'll be missed.

With the loss of Marijke, I suppose that the Tapics forum has lost its "resident physicist". Perhaps more significant than at first realized, in view of the superabundance of "politicos".

I forget the exact words that Marijke used, but I still remember her somewhat jovial remark to the effect that the universe was created by the process of tearing "nothing" in half.

I am hoping that Marijke's old web site might still be archived on archive.org, the Internet archive.
But I don't remember the domain of the web site. If it was a "separate private" domain, it might still be archived on archive.org.
I hope that someone here might be able to post the URL of Marijke's old web site, to see if it is archived or not. IIRC it had something to do with "maxwellian demon".

I don't believe that she was ever a member of the TAPCIS forum, David. She
was active in the Science and Math forum. She was a programmer by trade and
had recently earned her Ph.D. in mathematics.

Marijke's Website--the URL was furnished by Hannie van Belle, her friend
who sent news of her death--is: http://www.surd.info/marijke/

I dropped by it but don't think I saw anything about "maxwellian demon."

It was still under construction at the time of her death.

I found her old web site.
Marijke's old web site is archived at:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://maxwellian.demon.co.uk

Dec. 31, 2007 version:
http://web.archive.org/web/20071231100435/http://www.maxwellian.demon.co.uk/

I think she also had a nntp news server running on that server at one point. I think I once read a couple of the posts there, in the process of testing some version of the Lynx non-GUI text based browser.

Here is an article she wrote:

PS: her not being a TAPCIS user? are you kidding? for many years.

I couldn't really remember, and we did have some people who hung out on TAPCIS for the pleasure of the company and not because they used the software. (Actually, pretty much all of Sections 7, 8, 16, and even 9 was about the pleasure of the company and not because the people posting there were looking for technical assistance.)
