My extended deadline didn’t bring any more players so this round
offers a compact list of 15 definitions, but every one of them is a
gem. Your task is to choose the two most appealing or plausible.
Remember – no peeking.
Voting deadline is Thursday at 3pm for east-coast Americans, 8pm in
the UK, and earlier or later for everyone else.
1 fretful. [_It._]
2 an ambassador [Turk.]
3 aromatic seed pods used to flavour pilau rice [Kerala]
4 a unit of weight equal to 28 pounds.
5 a brown-sugar sweetmeat containing raisins, almonds, and dried
apricots
6 a fine but very hardy grass. Best known for use in Chia Pets.
7 Galium aparine, an annual having the stem beset with curved
prickles; North America and Europe and Asia. Also _Goosegrass_.
8 a sheer, crisp cotton fabric, embellished with woven, flocked, or
embroidered dots.
9 a fixed-term marriage contract according to the Usuli Shia
schools of Sharia; also called _nikáhu l-mut`ah_ (Ar: ‎ marriage for
pleasure)
10 (now also _nelchi_) an almond or almond-shaped device used by
caravans to prevent camel breeding. (pre-Arabic)
11 the lees of tea, esp. when used in fortune telling.
12 scraper used by early hominids.
13 a soft plastic that contains no pthylates.
14 a sea urchin of South East Asia.
15 a Chinese herb used in Szechuan-style cooking

As usual, no clue. I'll give my points to:

What a set?
Rewards for #9 and #10 please (how big is this 'device' in #10? The mind boggles - and can one be sure that the 'device' isn't really used in the #9 situation)

Jim -
A very tidy list. How about -
3 aromatic seed pods used to flavour pilau rice [Kerala]
and
14 a sea urchin of South East Asia.
It must be close to lunchtime.
Thanks,
Chuck

Jim, you apparently did the defs list--unlike your earlier messages--with a
wordprocessor. Such characters as apostrophes, as well as whatever the
oddities are in def #9, came through as weirdnesses, turning the whole
thing into a binary attachment. (Same for anyone who quoted back the entire
list along with a vote.) Yes, I got it eventually; just meant an extra trip
to the mailbox.
Anyway: Clueless, I'll try #10 and #14.

It's those dreaded high-ascii characters again. They appear OK on the
Dixonary website (at least on my computer) but may do strange and
unpredictable things to email.
Is this a problem for other players? Should we have a plain-ascii no-
accent policy? What do other dealers do? I'm open to suggestions.

Don't do anything special just for me, Jim--you or anyone else; I CAN go
get these nonstandard messages. I was just curious as to how they happen
(which is extremely rare). DID you import your posting from original
composition with a wordprocessor?

I like plain ASCII, but having said that, I had no problem with your
message and rarely have trouble with messages from others.
