View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 1963, SADDY: The Defs

Dodi Schultz
December 21st, 2008, 06:11 PM
Below, you'll find 20 definitions for SADDY, one of which has actually been
copied from a dictionary. Your job is to find that one. You have two
chances. Post your votes, for the two you think most likely, publicly, in
reply to this message.

You may vote if you somehow failed to submit a "definition" of your own.
You may vote even if you just now joined the game and didn't have a chance
to concoct and send in a def.

Feel free to look the word up--AFTER you've voted; we have an honor system
here.

Oh, one more thing: Your votes will count only if they're posted by the
deadline, which is Tuesday, 23 December, 8 a.m. EDT--different times in
different places.

1. a sad clown.

2. perky or flirtatious.

3. to evade work or duty.

4. a commotion; an uproar.

5. to curtsy; to say "thank you."

6. a brown dye from walnut shells.

7. _Scot._ to shape wood using an adze.

8. a shelter for cattle and other livestock.

9. the desert just north of Fezzan in Libya.

10. salmon first returning to the river from the sea.

11. _Archaic_ a jeweled necklace, collar, or headband.

12. a kind of light parasol. [fr Hindi _sadhi_, parasol]

13. a stand-in for the bride and/or groom in a child marriage. [< Hindi

14. _Mining_ a roof support column, usu. comprising a stack of
reinforced cribs.

15. a strip of contrasting color inlaid flush across the floor between
door jambs.

16. a fortified trail mix, consisting of gorp enriched by chunks of dried
or jerked beef.

17. _Sl._ a person who engages in pursuits not considered cool (q.v.) by
the younger generation.

18. one who suffers from decreased day length. [med. sl., from SAD,
Seasonal Adjustment Disorder]

19. a pathetic person; one regarded as socially inadequate,
unfashionable, or otherwise contemptible.

20. a small, easily-concealed knapsack carried by Irish religieux during

As usual, I have no clue -- just guesses!

How about these:

<< 6. a brown dye from walnut shells.

<< 14. _Mining_ a roof support column, usu. comprising a stack
<< of
<< reinforced cribs.

There are a lot of believable defs here. I'll vote for the curtsy and
the Hindi stand-in:

5 and 13 please.

Incidentally, although I attended two weddings during my recent trip
to India, sadhi was not a word I came across!

Hmm none of them seems plausible but nor does your word so I guess
that means they could all be right, apart from mine of course.

So I'll take a serve of meat and fish - 8 and 10

I don't believe the Sanskrit (12/13) for a minute. I paused over the 17/19
pair, which differ mainly in style and diction, but decided that they were
much too obvious, considering who the dealer is. I vote for the unobvious 6
and 9.

1 is actually believable despite its simplicity. And I don't believe a
reputable dictionary would use "cool" in the sense of def 17, but will vote
for it anyway.
