I've seen some pretty high scores in this game, but it's not often that two
players share almost half of the votes cast. Of the 38 votes, 9 each went
to Chris Carson's fighter pilot slang and Toni Savage's radar detector.
Chris leads in the rolling scores and gets the deal. Toni gets the "best of
all possible worlds" with 9 points and no deal.
A yogibogeybox, by the way, is a word invented by James Joyce in his 1922
novel _Ulysses_. Online references (the Phrontistery and Fischer's wwftd
site) claim it refers to the apparatus of a spiritualist, although that's
difficult to pull out of Joyce's stream-of-consciousness. Lest either of
those sources be deemed not a reputable dictionary, advertisements for _A
Supplement to The Oxford English Dictionary: Volume IV, Se-Z_ indicate the
word is included, along with Yerkish and Zen Buddhism. I was unable to
locate a dead-tree copy of the OED supplement for the round, so used the
wwftd rendering of the definition. Sites like yogibogeybox.org seem to
indicate the word is still in use in the occult community.
JohnnyB did not know the definition but did have a hunch he submitted with
his def: "I do trust you that it is in a dictionary, but it must be fairly
modern - maybe someone having a go at spritualists around 1900." His hunch
translated into an accurate vote, along with Chuck, Hugo, and Russ, netting
me a D4 (normally a disappointment but since it's less than half the top
score I don't feel so bad.)
