Hi all --

Sorry I did not have time to post a progress report. You wouldn't
believe what the life of a political activist is like 30 days before
an election...

However, I think all of our regulars have sent me definitions, 17 of
which, along with the real one, are provided for your voting pleasure
below. Please select the two that delight you most, for whatever
reason, and vote by:

1. a.m CDT Friday October 3

That's 7 a.m. for you in GMT, 11 p.m. Pacific on Thursday, and all
others can figure it out on their own.

Nancy
(official D-in-P, dealer in perpetuity, according to Mike)

1. a kind of salt water snail

2. a mountain nymph

3. a West Indian stew consisting of fish or occasionally pork,
seasonings such as lime and garlic, and often fruits and vegetables.

4. a decorative border on silver objects, often containing laurel
branches.

5. a short rafter used in a hip roof.

6. stereotyped or conventional literary ideas, plot, character, etc.

7. a two arched bridge over a boundary ditch [EE, obs]

8. a portable raised platform used as temporary walkway over a flooded
path or
road.

9. a single word expressing a complex of ideas.

10. a decorative frieze on a bridge abutment.

11. a mixture of mead and barley water.

12. unfit to speak of; unmentionable; impious; execrable.

13. a light wooden boat used for lake fishing.

14. the platform of a minaret [arch.]

15. [Welsh] a hole in a leather strap or belt punched through by an
awl

16. [naut.] a small bucket hung around the neck of seasick
watchstanders.

17. a phoneme consisting of two distinct vowels not separated by a
glottal stop.

18. an adage, usually related to weather.

I don't think I want to know!

Something else I don't know is the definition of "poncif." So here are my guesses, both using "decorative":

<< 4. a decorative border on silver objects, often containing laurel
<< branches.

<< 10. a decorative frieze on a bridge abutment.

I'll take 3 and 4, which couldn't be more unalike.

I got a bad feeling in my gut concerning the hole in a leather belt.
Therefore I factored fifteen and I'm voting for 5 and 10 instead.

Next time I'll take off the belt before using the awl.

Been there, done that. Hope you're receiving handsome remuneration. Watch
out for campaign gingivitis; take extra vitamin C.

My votes in the present contest: #3 and #5.

Handsome remuneration? Surely you jest. I am an elected party
official and therefore in an ethical bind when it comes to acting as a
campaign staffer. Perhaps that something I will get over by 2010.
One lives in hope.

Campaign Gingivitis? Hunh? Caused by?

Who did you campaign for?

Oops. I think I forgot to submit a def this round.

A sailor visiting the West Indies who eats 3 before sailing might find
himself in need of 16.

Must have been too busy to include the real one....

Nevertheless, I'll toss votes at #5 and #11.
