View Full Version : [Dixonary] Round 1934: The Definitions

Dodi Schultz
August 27th, 2008, 11:46 PM
The word is PERSE, and below are 18 definitions of it--well, one definition
and 17 "definitions" created by your fellow players. See if you can pick
out the real one; choose the two you think most likely, and let us all know
your choices by direct reply to this message.

You can vote even if you're one of those regulars who failed to submit a
def this time around (you know who you are). You can vote even if you just
popped into the game room and you're totally new to all this and missed the
making-up-a-definition stage.

Votes count only if they're posted before the deadline, which is 11 a.m.
EDT on Friday 29 August; that's 8 a.m. for the West Coasters, 10 a.m. for
our midcountry players, 4 p.m. for those in the UK, 5 p.m. for the
Netherlands, and 1 a.m. Saturday for Jim.

1. to ponder.

2. [OE] a purse.

3. a removable collar.

4. _Obs._ noble; honorable.

5. to dry out; to dessicate.

6. _Obs._ to browse or peruse.

7. to set aside for future use.

8. _Archaic_ a grammar book; a book of magic.

9. a low-growing plant of the portulaca family.

10. to aim for or achieve that which will suffice.

11. dark grayish blue or purple [ME _pers_, from Old French]

12. an old word for peach [French _pomme perse_, Persian apple]

13. _Archaic_ Eng/Fr name for the language of Persia, changed by later
usage to Farsi.

14. a dark blue dye used for royal garments in Media and Persia, made
from wild plums, _Prunus tenella_.

15. 1. a strip of contrasting color inlaid near the periphery of a table-
top or such. 2. to inlay such a strip.

16. an opening in a medieval fortification, usually in the form of a
cross, through which a crossbow could be fired.

17. a style of fishing net constructed so that the bottom edge can be
gathered, as with a drawstring, to close the net.

18. a gemstone which in ordinary light looks like a plain pebble but
which under ultraviolet light appears incredibly beautiful.

Since #4 describes me so accurately & #5 is next to it, I'll vote for 4 & 5.

Alas. I missed the submission deadline and tried to send in a late def, but
got this one just as it went out.

Verb or noun -- I'll go for a couple of the lonely nouns even though I feel as though it should be a verb. <G>

<< 3. a removable collar.

<< 9. a low-growing plant of the portulaca family.

7 and 10 seem unlikely.

And I love your intro... I may steal it for my next deal!

Dodi,

Did I use the wrong email address (schultzATcompuserve.com)? After seeing
the def list I rechecked a message supposedly went out to you on 8/27 at
10:21am.

Oh well, I'll toss votes to 5 and 15.

Dick, #12 has been eliminated from consideration (see my special notice),
since it had been posted publicly, which I hadn't noticed (and obviously
you hadn't either!). I've recorded your vote for #16; please pick another
entry for your second vote.

I'll skip a second choice, as after voting, I checked upon the meaning.

In that case, Dodi, it looks like I'll have to stay in. Otherwise it all
gets impossibly messy.

Dodi -

Nice intro, but a difficult word. How about?

1. to ponder.

and

5. to dry out; to dessicate.

Thanks,

Chuck

And it arrived, too; I just checked my TAPCIS files. Somehow, probably in
the confusion of trying to help Mike ferret out the facts of the last
round, it went astray. My profound apologies. And of course you'll be
getting two dealer points.

I think--and my understanding is that the dealer decides, when these messy
matters arise--that Paul will indeed get the point for Dick's vote. In
ADDITION to the two dealer points.
