For the next round of lexical competition, the word is:

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
* *
* PERSE *
* *
*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

New arrivals are welcome. Do not look up the word in a dictionary. Do
concoct an original yet uncannily believable definition and send it to
me--NOT by reply to this message but by personal e-mail.

Do so before the deadline, which is 11 p.m. EDT on Wednesday 27 August.
That's 8 p.m. for Left Coasters, 10 p.m. for Dixonarians in WI and IL; and
Thursday the 28th in some other currently relevant regions--4 a.m. in
England, 5 a.m. in the Nether Lands, 1 p.m. in Oz. (I THINK. Corrections
will be gratefully accepted.)

If you happen to KNOW the meaning of the word, please notify me instantly,
since if enough do, that would kind of spoil the fun, and I'd want to
choose a different word.

Assuming your word has nothing to do with the Nez Perse (native North
Americans) nor with the children of Oceana and Tethys - the Oceanids - one
of whom was Perse or Persea then I have no idea so ....

Perse: a kind of applique embroidery where cut-out shapes of bright cloth
are sewn onto a plain background

JohnnyB

PS... Of course applique should have an accent, but I am not sure whether
/CIS/your software allows accents

Looks like a crown-worthy definition, Johnny!

Actually, the Native American people (famous for the Appaloosa horse) are
the Nez Perce with a 'c'.
