Judy,
re: Canon EOS Rebel XSi
It looks like there are lots of bundles with multiple lens and a few body only.

I'm tempted to try for the body and look at B&H for a lens to start with. Next month hopefully. Still have an old film Canon F1 with the original 50mm lens and a 35-105 plus a macro lens. And my little digital is also a Canon Powershot S50, but old...

I'm tempted to try for the body and look at B&H for a lens to start with. The kit lens (18-55) is a pretty decent little lens with IS (image stabilization) and when you get it with the kit, it's a lot cheaper than if you buy the lens separately. So I'd go ahead and go for the kit, but ONLY the basic kit (body & kit lens). Most of the other combos out there have crappy lenses (the 17-85 or the 18-55 non-IS). It's a very sweet camera with lots of options, smaller than you might expect and certainly lighter than I expected. The first zoom I'd recommend is the 70-300 IS or the 55-250 IS, both very reasonably priced and both excellent optically (the 70-300 probably a bit better than the 55-250).

Judy,
the kit lens, 18-55 w/IS then is what I will look for IF I can get my life in order in the near future.

If you decide to go with another basic walk-around lens, then maybe it makes sense to get the body only, but frankly the 18-55IS and 55-250IS are pretty decent lenses for the money.

Judy,
It's all about my prospects. I'm stuck on the proverbial dime right now and am looking for an exit hatch.
When I find one, a camera like this is just what I/we need.

Ridiculous vs. Sublime dept:
R: Bought Molly a Canon A720. I'm chastened to discover that it takes snaps on full auto that beat what I can do with ten minutes of curve agony in RAW, slaving over the flat, blah default output from my three-year-old K-M A2. Same 8 megamarketdroidpixels. Different goosing of chroma, sharpness, etc. Canon has the pulse of the Kodachrome generation, for sure.
S: The husband of an old college roommate of Molly's is a pro photog. He brought his EOS 5D. I sat behind him as he massaged his shots in CS3. I blanched.
Talk about envy.... That 5D sensor is magnificent. You can blow up *sections* of ASA 800 shots, and they're fine! And that's two year old technology. I need money, I think.

Said proverb isn't that old and it ain't chinese either. It was first reported as having been spoken in English in a speech in 1939, and at that time the speaker reported that it had been sent to him in 1936 by a British politician who, in turn, said that a former British diplomat assigned to China noted that it was a Chinese proverb. That's as good as you're going to get on its origin.

When the younger brother who was with me in Africa wanted a recommendation for a P&S, I told him to get the A720 and he's been thrilled.
