Below you will find eighteen definitions, seventeen of which are the product of our players' wonderful imaginations, and one of which came from an "accepted dictionary".

Vote for TWO definitions, as a public message (in reply to this one), before the deadline of 11am PDT/2pm EDT/18:00 UTC Tuesday June 24. You didn't need to submit a definition to vote, but don't peek in a dictionary!

** BUHL **

1: a red pimple.

2: [Ar.] the green lentil .

3: a measure of soil permeability.

4: a dark ale made from the last boil of the malt.

5: [E India; also _puhl_] the pulas tree or hardwood climber, butea frondosa.

6: a domed cap nut of metal or plastic used on the threaded and of a pipe or bar to prevent injury from the sharp edges.

7: the common name of any plant of the genus Piper, found mainly in the western Pacific; an intoxicating drink made from the root of this.

8: a colorless, fragrant liquid, distilled from the oils of rosewood, bergamot, and other plants and trees and used in perfume manufacture.

9: an elaborate inlay of tortoiseshell, ivory, and metal, used especially in decorating furniture.

10: [obs.] a strong brew of malted grains in water with a naturally high mineral content.

11: a fine grade of asphalt made from course sand in place of gravel.

12: a type of dog, often confused with the _bulldog_ q.v.

13: a ticket window or similar small opening.

14: a lamb sausage made in parts of Bavaria.

15: a wall round the top of a well.

16: a pencil or charcoal drawing.

17: a large, footed urn.

18: complain; whine.

5 and 8, please.

Best wishes,
Tim B.

PS I'll be on holiday from 26 June to 13 July, probably without internet
access.

Dan

There's no time for deep thought today, so I'm just guessing:

5 and 12 please.

I thought this time I would vote for two related definitions (why
not?), so immediately I considered 1 & 2 for the red-green colour
combo.

Then I thought 3 & 4 for the soil/boil rhyme. Or even 1 & 4 (my last
boil began as a red pimple). Or 4 & 10 for two strong brews.

If I were botanical I'd take 5 & 7.

Or 6 & 11 for obscure engineering and lack of proofreading. (And I
always thought the plastic cap was to avoid damage to the thread not
me - this game is nothing if not instructive.)

Then there's 8 & 9 for their matching lexicographical structure,
though I'm tempted to reward 9 & 17 jointly for their contribution to
interior decorating.

I could make dinner with 10 & 14 for a brew and stew.

If I had a confused dog it would surely whine and then I'd complain
about 12 & 18.

Finally I could use both 15 & 16 for drawing water.

But really none of those pairs do it for me so in the end I'm putting
the ale in the urn and voting for 4 & 17 because they are both wrong.

Yes Dan - that's 4 & 17.

I'll take 5 and 18 because they add to today's date and the idea of a
whining tree appeals to me.
