2.4.1 installed JRE 1.6 update 4

but

I uninstalled JRE 1.6 update 4 because
I already had JRE 1.6 update 6 (patch) installed.

Maybe the custom install of OO allows bypassing install of Jave JRE?

This OpenOffice.org Other Downloads (http://download.openoffice.org/other.html) page contains download links for their full complement of versions, languages, and operating systems, including 2.4.1 in US English on Windows, and has a checkbox you can deselect if you don't want to download the Java runtime with it.
