Here are 18 definitions of KLOOF, one of which appears in my
trusty Webster's New International, 2nd ed. Please cast your
votes for the two of your choice by public response to this
message.

The deadline for voting is about 35 hours from now, at 8:00 pm,
Eastern Daylight Time, tomorrow, Saturday, April 26.

Enjoy!

1. A device consisting of a long suspended pole weighted at one
end and having a bucket at the other end, used in the Near
East and especially Egypt for raising water, as for the
irrigation of land.

2. The Boer goat, developed in South Africa in the late 19th
century for meat production, probably a cross-breed between
indigenous goats and European varieties.

3. Flat roof atop a small shed attached to a frame house. from
the Dutch [kloofen], to cover.

4. The special broom used in the Netherlands to clean the
sidewalk.

5. [Afrik.] A disturbance; also, a deviance from expected
outcomes.

6. Cargo jettisoned from ship but marked by buoys for recovery.

7. [Afrik.] An enclosure for cattle close to a farmhouse.

8. A spillway lined with gravel to prevent erosion.

9. [Afrik.] A type of cheese from the Transvaal.

10. [Du.] Shag-cut tobacco, esp. an aromatic.

11. A heavy curtain hung across a doorway.

12. [Arab.] A small tent used for storage.

13. A deep glen; ravine; gorge.

14. A wind-powered pump.

15. A close-fitting hat.

16. A fraternal order.
