I think u just stay logged in long enough and the update downloads automatically and ask for confirm to install.
Be sure to take custom install to avoid installing extra junk.

David,
I use AIM 1.0.414. Text chat only and no exploits need apply. <g>

I still have CSIM (AIM) (win32) 1.7.x installed on my Win 95 PC.
Chances are there are security holes even in them, but probably no exploits, as you say.
I tend to use Pidgin (GPL?, formerly GAIM) for multiprotocol IM.
Miranda is a nice small footprint multiprotocol IM.
I believe the next major release of Pidgin (3.0) is expected to have voice chat support.
BTW, Secunia PSI does check version levels of Pidgin (not to mention many other programs) for critical updates, etc. However Secunia probably does lag the actual update releases of the vendors by a little bit.

David,
Yup, holes, but not exploits. As basic a chat tool as you could ask for. I do remember CSIM, but plain forgot about it. Did use GAIM for a bit, but went back to AIM as that is what I was using for work.
Secunia is definitely a useful tool for discovering how far behind you have goten with upgrades.

One feature of PIDGIN (formerly GAIM) that I like is that it checks for email on my Yahoo and AIM accounts, which I seldom use and which get very little mail so that I know when to use my web browser to read the mail, without having to set up an email account in Thunderbird. And Yahoo does not support POP3 on free accounts anyway.

David,
Do you have url to download pidgin?
Tks,
http://www.pidgin.im/
(Open source, IIRC)
FWIW
I've tried and/or now have installed the following IM programs:
AIM
Yahoo
Multiprotocol:
Paltalk
Trillian
Pidgin
Miranda
Browser based (text only):
AIM Express (Java based?)
Yahoo Web Messenger (Flash based)
Google Talk in Gmail (Jscript/AJAX?)
For me, all of them have worked ok, more or less, of course features are different.
I think Trillian now supports voice chat (e.g. AIM & Yahoo protocols), but have not tried that feature yet.
BTW there is a page on Wikipedia somewhere that compares IM programs.
But for now, at least, Pidgin is the one that loads in my Win XP startup.
