OK-- Round 1892 it is (in case I forget again).

And here we have 18 lovely definitions, one of which is actually the real one! Please vote for TWO by public posting here. The deadline is Monday evening at 19:00 EDT. which is 4pm Pacific

Daylight time, and sometime after midnight over in England.

Newcomers welcome, just don't peek in a dictionary, just guess at what the real def is.


1. A ravine or gully, especially in southern Asia.

2. A Caribbean dish consisting of plantains fried with some sort of fish.

3. a diacritical mark denoting a precise definition.

4. ancient stringed musical instrument.

5. [Sanskrit] a forebear of some sort.

6. a staff of officials in India. [Ar. umala]

7. A sound modification of the preceding vowel by lengthening and softening it by adding a soft "h", sometimes called a soft umlaut

8. a Portuguese child-minder.

9. A less brittle concrete made with pumice and coal dust for use in earthquake zones.

10. a long narrow eggplant.

Boy, it sure didn't seem like there was a lot of time given to get in
a definition. Maybe there was, but it wasn't enough for me...

Anyway, I'll plop on 4 and 12, although 5 appeals, too.

When I have no idea, I normally go with vox pop, but this time not. Vox pop
says it is 5 or 13 but the in each case the word is the wrong shape for the
ety. I'll vote for the unpopular 6 and 12.
