For Dodi: I found that a saucer wasn't enough. So I got a small jar, dug
a hole, and buried it except for the top half inch or so, and put the
beer in there. That worked for me.

Actually, Guerri, I cut the story short.
I concluded, at first, that a saucer wasn't
deep enough, and I did try other containers.
Nothing worked. :-(

That seems like rather harsh treatment for a hard drive.

Are you sure they're going to want it back?

Too bad, Dodi. I always hated to waste the beer, myself! It's not
totally perfect anyway.

I didn't see the original question, but if it was how to keep slugs away from garden plants, you might try diatomaceous earth placed around the base of the plants. Also, see http://www.ext.colostate.edu/PUBS/INSECT/05515.html. (That site also mentions wood ash as an alternative to diatomaceous earth, but be careful with that -- wood ash is quite alkaline, and too much of it can poison the plants you are trying to protect.)

Lindsay--and after this, we've got to stop cluttering the Dixonary
list--that was quite a few messages ago and started with a reference to
last round's word, which was slug-related. I just mentioned that slugs had
attacked the strawberries I once tried in the backyard; when the beer
treatment failed, I abandoned the crop. That was 20 or 25 years ago.

What kind wood ash do you get involved in? "6 oz per square yard of wood ash is a normal dressing to encourage flowering as it
provides potash" -- if you had said "coal ash" I would have agreed with you that you shouldn't stack it up agains tender young
stems, but that a ring allround *may* act as a slug deterrent.

Me, I use a dilute ferrous sulphate solution. Again, not very effective but better than slug pellets (metaldehyde) which work pretty
well but are not very kind to birds. I also use copper bands around pots - they work very well.

Sure, a little is a good thing, and 6 oz / sq. yd. strikes me as a little. But I have heard of cases of people dumping it on the soil as if it were compost, and that is definitily Not A Good Thing.

Sorry; I only saw what appeared under the OT heading. I didn't realize that OT meant you weren't supposed to reply to it.

C'mon, Lindsey. The sarcasm was unnecessary. We both know what "OT"
denotes. I simply meant that the OT messages were becoming overwhelming,
and confusing for players; a number of them reported that they'd missed
vital game-related announcements.
