View Full Version : [Dixonary] OT: Win XP vs Vista

This is for Guerri and anyone else who may be interested:

Someone has just posted a note on another list I'm on, to the effect that
Microsoft has announced that it's going to stop selling Windows XP in June.
If you want to get a Win computer with XP preinstalled rather than the
infamous Vista, there's said to be a list of those available at
http://windowssecrets.com/comp/080306/#story1

Yep. My brother told me that the other day, as to government machines (once Microsoft stops supporting an OS, the government generally won't buy it).

Support for xp will continue for some years yet.

Possibly the OS itself will be available on eBay. I know PC Connection's
online catalog claims to have it.

I really do have to get moving on this. I really do want XP and not Vista.

Why not vista? it's a better system and on a modern system certainly the one to choose.

IMAO, the whole thing is a ruse to force users of Vista to buy a lot of
software because the software they have won't run on Vista. The bandits in
Washington will make another fortune out of this ploy.

Wayne -

Are you sure it isn't a ruse to promote Linux?

If you've ever seen Steve Ballmer up close you'll know what I mean.

The problem is that it affects so much more than just software produced by a certain company in Washington. My genealogy program had to put out a new version because the old one wouldn't install on Vista. The problem is that the fixes to make it install on Vista take away a lot of the custom install controls that I prefer to use. This business of letting Microsoft set the standards for everybody is a royal pain...

Chuck: I'm older than you and I well remember CP/M. I started out with
AppleII+. I wrote a long program in Apple Basic to print Pap smear reports.

I had an Apple II too. How'd you get the slide into the computer slot?

It's fairly simple to get the slide into the computer slot. You just need a soft hammer, then you put one end of the slide next to the slot and tap gently and repeatedly until the slide is completely inserted. Of course you don't get to do this more than 2 or 3 times before having to get a new computer.

I still have an Apple ][. And the large red covered manual with hand
drawn illustrations of how the colour graphics work. Most of the rest
of the manual looks like it was originally mimeographed. I'm not sure
if it still runs. Some rainy afternoon I'll probably drag it out and see.

Like my 4x5 Speed Graphic camera, it just doesn't get the use it once did.

Neither does my twin lens Rollei acquired in 1950. But it was a great camera
in its day.

Me too - I wrote a typing tutor for Apple II ( and then ported it to Atari ) - I worked for a commodore house at the time so this
was merely extending our software onto other machines
