View Full Version : Cinderella story ... or 18-1!!

I'm just starting to come down off Cloud Nine from the Giants' improbable impossible Cinderella-story last-35-seconds-of-the-game win over the Patriots last night. With everyone (even me, I confess) thoroughly expecting a Patriots win and a perfect end to their perfect season, it was just amazing... astounding... to be sitting there with time running out and watching (a) the Giants take the lead with a series of unbelievable plays (how did Manning get away from that pass rush? how did that kid Tyree manage to hold on to that ball???) and then (b) the Giants defense continuing to do what it had done so well all game long and making it so that the the Patriots were totally unable to do anything with the little time (even with timeouts) they had left.
It was a great game (would have been great even if the Giants hadn't been able to score at the end); it was great football. The Patriots showed up expecting to be 19-0; the Giants fans showed up with signs that read 18-1. And 18-1 it was... and oh how sweet it is...
And it is sweetest perhaps most of all for the 1972 Dolphins. That's football's one and only unbeaten team ever. They have a party every year now when the last undefeated team in the league finally loses a game. This year, they had to wait until last night... and it was the Giants who, improbably, impossibly, wonderfully, gave them their party.
Big Blue rides again!!!

Putting my euphoria over the Giants aside, that was the best Super Bowl I've ever watched. Four lead changes. Very few penalties. No stupid ones. Great game plans on both sides. Excellent execution...and hanging on the edge of your seat until under 20 seconds to go in the game.
How much better can it get? (other than the Giants-Packers playoff game.)
Neither team "screwed up". The Giants played tough and the Patriots looked ready. I think that Big Blue put fantastic pressure on Brady and Brady was not given enough time to play his game.
On our side, what a job by the offensive front line! Manning had time and on 3rd down, they kept the Patriots away from Eli. As to Eli....<g> I'm happy to see him play up to his hype.
That amazing catch.....
...truth be told, I thought that should have been called a sack. Manning was sacked by the rules. A defender had two hands on him and Eli was in the pocket. I'm stunned that no one blew a whistle. Tyree's catch was one for the highlight reel and the ages.
What a game! ...and the best part was I watched it with my family. Both my boys were glued to the game and we all jumped to a group hug on the go-ahead TD!
Makes a father very happy.

But even though he's being raised as a Bears fan (his mama is from Chicago), he was thrilled to wear his Giants shirt to school today!

I did not realize how much people dislike Bill Belichick. Maybe people are speaking up now that the Pats got beat. Other than die-hard New England fans, most people love that the "perfect" Pats got beat.

Other than die-hard New England fans, most people love that the "perfect" Pats got beat. Two things have made people root against New England: (a) the spygate bit (nobody but nobody likes a cheater) and (b) the arrogance of Bill Belichek. Even my friends in New England don't like Belichek. They may like that he produces winners (usually...), but not how he gets there.

The anti-cheater sentiment is powerful. That, and that Belichek is not the nicest of guys. (a la Barry Bonds).
