Dave, this appeared, from you, with no indication of whom (or what) it's
responding to. Could you please explain?

Dodi,
There is indication of who it was responding to, if you know where to
look. :)
First, it chronologically followed Mike Shefler's complaint of sending
in a def for kif and not having it posted, so one might have guessed
that was the intended recipient.
Or, in the internet headers, it contains the line:
References: <Dave.Cunningham.1rq5b5 (AT) no-mx (DOT) www.tapcis.com/forums> <mshefler.1rr85a (AT) no-mx (DOT) www.tapcis.com/forums>
That is the information that thread-aware browsers (and tapcis.com) use to piece together threads and replies. You can see from here that it was a reply to a message posted by "mshefler". (The other referenced message is the original posting, "grandparent" of the message in the thread.)
The message can be id'd (possibly using a search function in TAPCIS?) by searching for the corresponding message with the information in the header:
Message-ID: <mshefler.1rr85a (AT) no-mx (DOT) www.tapcis.com/forum
Obviously, if there had been a partial quoteback, it would have been
more clear without relying on the internet headers, or a modern email
client that makes use of such headers to thread messages.
