Here are 16 carefully-crafted defs of the word UMAMI, only one of
which I found in my dictionary. Vote for TWO definitions, as a public
forum message (in reply to this one), before the deadline:

18:00 UTC on Friday 14th December, which is
1:00 PM EST
11:00 AM PST, all on the same day.

New players are welcome, even if you didn't enter a definition this
round. Don't look in a dictionary. Full rules, if you're curious, are
at http://tinyurl.com/br3oc

6: a wave suitable for surfing (fr. Jap.)

14: a tingling in the mouth that proceeds to numbness (and possible
paralysis and death) following consumption of fugu (blowfish).

15: female imam: in the ranking of imams umami conveys infalibility
but it does not convey leadership.Only Fatimah al Zaheer, daugher of
Muhammed, has ever held this title.

16: a category of taste corresponding to the 'savoury' flavour of free
glutamates in various foods, esp. protein-rich fermented and aged ones
such as mature cheeses and soy sauce; spec. the flavour of monosodium
glutamate. Also: monosodium glutamate itself.

Impossible choices - #14 and #16 for me - drawn out of the wide-blue-yonder with a far-eastern foodie touch

9 and 16 today ... though I would have thought 16 was from Mr.

Hi Tim,

I missed getting in my definition in time, but I can at least vote.

There's a whole bunch of great defs that I'd like to reward with a point.
But since guessing the right def is my only option at scoring this round,
I'll follow the theory that dealers usually prefer not to combine real and
fake defs, so I'll vote for the two knifes of the Northern people:

> 2: a kind of Inuit knife.

> 8: an Eskimo snow knife used for building igloos.

Best, Hugo

Tim -

They all look crafty for sure. How about -

9: [Swahili] a woman's garment made by wrapping fabric around the body.

and

14: a tingling in the mouth that proceeds to numbness (and possible
paralysis and death) following consumption of fugu (blowfish).

Thanks,

Chuck

I don't know why you say that - I thought it was allowable tactics to vote for your own dafunition: I know that Paul did quite
recently. Not that I have done so in this case - maybe!!

I'll go with a couple of animals -- the question is, which two?

Okay -- here they are!

<< 1: [Jp.] Fresh water eel.

<< 4: [Swahili] a rhinoceros.

I'll take a swirling snow of glutemates, 12 and 16.

Interesting word. Apparently Japanese, Inuit, or African.

I guess I'll have one from Column A and one from Column B: #2 and #6.

It's probably African. Or none of the above.

1 because I thought of that and
16 because someone spent a lot of time on that!

Not seeing any that particularly jump out at me, I'll give votes to #14
and #16.

I'll be totally uncreative and go with 1 and 16. As Mike said, they
go well with octopus.
