Really, Paul? Did that happen just within the past couple of days? I'm at
compuserve.com, and I received a personal e-mail (i.e., not from Dixonary)
from Hugo just three days ago.

It is actually more complicated than the idiots banning compuserve or whatever. It is that a particular transatlantic line is
casually banned without recourse to any thought or commonsense. That may involve several different ISPs over this side of the pond.
I eventually had ti give up my Compuserve account because it was happening all too frequently.

I really do relate to the comment about arriving at O'Hare.... Last Thursday entry at T5 had 12 lines open for US citizens of which
there were about 120 and 6 lines open for about 2000 visitors. I have no objection to citizens being processed preferentially, but
after the US cirizens were processed the 12 lines sat there manned and not used. Meanwhile of the 6 lines for visitors 2 of them
were manned and never processed a single person during the time I was there. After about an hour the Chicago police arrived and
opened the unused citizens line for visitors to use. The final result was that I (and I was probably about 2/3 along) spent 3 hours
standing in a slow moving queue. I have an illness that means that could be potentially life theatening. One of these days someone
will die and Immigration will be sued for millions of dollars for gross incompetenece - and I shall cheer if they lose (as they
should) and have to pay.

Uh, no one suggested that CompuServe had been banned.

Rather, Paul stated that CompuServe had banned, or blocked, e-mail from the
Netherlands. (I pointed out that I--I'm on CompuServe--had received mail
from there as recently as three days ago.)

I'm sorry to hear about the unconscionable treatment you experienced at
O'Hare. Blame Nancy; she's the Chicagoan in the group. ;-)

This will sound idiotic (and it is) but I recently refused to go with my
eldest son on a cruise of the eastern Mediterranean on RSSC Navigator
because I couldn't get sure air reservations without going through O'Hare.
I don't walk well or fast. I always seem to arrive at a gate farthest out
from the center and leave from a different ray at the farthest gate. I sent
my d-i-l in my place.

If there are no dogs in heaven, then when I die I want to go where they
went.

Hi Dodi,

I'm not aware of any such blocking from the part of CompuServe recently, nor
of any blocking of the demon.nl domain ever - but I am quite out of the loop
for such things.

When I was still a sysop at the Dutch help Forum, we routinely had to answer
the question of how to get a domain unblocked by AOL, so I can indeed
confirm that at least until a little over a year ago, AOL (and hence
CompuServe as well) did indeed routinely block entire domains and place the
burden on the customer to have the postmaster of their domain contact AOL
customer service to get the blocking resolved. This is but one of the
reasons why I stopped using CompuServe for mail.

Best, Hugo

Hugo, it's my understanding that for some time (well over a year, perhaps
two or more), CompuServe has not been a part of AOL but is grouped with a
separate operation called "Time Warner Web Properties."

Hi Dodi,

Ah, well. I didn't know that - CompuServer was still part of AOL when I
stopped volunteering on the Dutch Help Forum. After that, I stopped paying
attention :-)

Best, Hugo

Johnny,

It's not just USA that has preferential treatment for its citizens. I've
stood in long lines in Japan and other places where there are only a few
lines open for foreigners while there are 2-3 times as many (and often
unused) for natives.

I think O'hare is better than Dulles, where there are several separate
terminals and you have to walk a long way to get to the shuttles. Coming
back thi time, I had to walk the length of 3 terminal buildings and take 2
separate shuttles to make my connection. as well as going through
immigration and customs (always a delay for me as I carry commercial goods,
and even though they are duty-free, they still have to be "inspected") -
fortunately I had 3 hours between flights.
