After all my complaining, I thought I better post that I found a solution. The CompuServe feature for subscribing to forums works well enough for me to keep up with the forums. Every day it sends me an email list (with links) of threads that were born the day before, and existing threads that had new activity the day before. This lets me keep track of topics that interest me, and go to them quickly (via the links).
BTW, this is in addition to the feature that sends me an email with a link to any reply to one of my messages. A feature I wish the makers of vBulletin would add, but probably never will.
