It was the Greek letters. I have a client who uses
funky letters in their sigline and every email they
send comes in as an attachment! Here it is in plain
text (not well formatted, though...sorry.)

================================

I was surprised that some folks did not vote even with
the extended
deadline. I ran into a snag when two people gave defs
based on the
correct etymology of the word -- so I combined the
three definitions
as best I could without trying to put Greek characters
in the text.

1. the process of returning a clergyman to lay status
[Heimerson]
NV (Stevens) (Barrs) (Emery) 3 points

2. government by moneylenders. [Hirst] 11 14 nil

3. [Obs.] leprosy [Stevens] 1 8 (Shefler) 1

4. the application of baffles, curtains and other
items to improve
the acoustics of a building [Bourne] NV nil

5. a false assumption of knowledge. [Schultz] *10
12 (Lodge)
(Savage) (Carson) 2 + 3 = 5 !!

6. a skin disease of cattle. [Emery] NV
(Savage)
(Madnick) )Shepherdson) 3

7. An accelerating reference frame for which
Newton's laws of
motion do not apply and in which force does not equal
the product of
an object's mass and acceleration. [Widdis] 8 *10
2 + 0 = 2

8. the belief, prevalent in 14th century Europe and
England, that
the papal schism heralded the coming of the
Anti-Christ and presaged
the Apocalpyse. [Shefler] 3 12 (Stevens)
(Widdis) (Barrs)
(Shepherson) 4

9. A dispute about facts or knowledge, in contrast
to a merely
verbal dispute. [Crom] *10 12 (Carson) 2 + 1 = 3

10. swordplay with an imaginary opponent as a form
of practice; also
_fig._ [Gk., fm s - 'shadow' + -m 'fighting']
[Keating] NV
4 points
an act or instance of fighting a shadow or an
imaginary enemy.
[RHD] D4
1. a variety of sabre-fencing without any
contact; 2. non-
contact swordplay used by film stuntmen to simulate a
fight [Gk s
= shadow + ?? = fight] [Barrs] 1 8 4 points
COMBINED as swordplay with an imaginary
opponent as a form of
practice; an act or instance of fighting a shadow or
imaginary
enemy. (Widdis) (Schultz) (Lodge) (Crom) D4

11. The study of pain and its causes. [Savage]
5 6 (Hirst)
(Madnick) (Emery) (Abell) 4

12. A dispute about natural laws. [Carson] 5 9
(Schultz)
(Shefler) (Crom) 3

13. condition of the skin when it has been
scratched (med.)
[Shepherdson] 6 8 nil

14. cunning, amoral, and opportunist political
activity. [Lodge]
5 *10 (Hirst) 2 + 1 = 3

15. a political movement in 4th Republic France
promoting
farming. [Scott] NV (Abell) 1

Madnick 6 11 no points
Abell 11 15 nil

Note the combination of Barrs' and Keating's defs
with the real
def. The etymologies were all just too close to the
real def (sigh).

Leaving Dodi as the next dealer, and a four way tie
for Winnah
between Shefler, Keating, Barrs and Savage.
