It was only invented (or brought over from some other
language) around 2000 or so.
Might have been a bit earlier in really upperupper
class circles... originally pashmina scarves cost
several thousand dollars, because they were said to be
made from the fur of (yaks? Angora goats?) that came
from some spot on the animal that had really soft but
warm fur. Supposedly, a large neckscarf weighed only
a couple of ounces, but was as warm as one much
thicker and heavier. And it took dye really well, so
they come in lots of colors.
I read that it was really all hype, and today, as I
said, you can get them for a buck or two on the street
here in NYC. (probly still thousands out in
Hollywood)
