Sure laptops are useful if you want a computer on a trip. But that
doesn't mean the laptop *has* to go on any given trip.

And another reason for having a laptop instead of a desktop could be
that the laptop takes up less space. And if you want a high-speed
internet connection, a laptop can go to the library (or elsewhere) with
you (I suppose you could call that a "trip").
