In case you missed it, there is a nice article in the New York Times today (8/29/07): Study Traces Cat’s Ancestry to the Middle East (http://www.nytimes.com/pages/science/index.html).
Not only are they not from Egypt, the house cat began to diverge from its wildcat ancestor ages before Egypt’s heyday.
