In reply to John, whose keyboard (as I understand it) can't send plaintext:
John, being just slightly advanced beyond the manual typewriter, I
obviously can't comment intelligently. I know only that no one else with
whom I correspond--in the US or on two other continents--reports any
difficulty sending plaintext. So perhaps there's some answer. I've no idea
what it is. Maybe some other player can help.

Dodi et al (more 'et al')
If anyone has any ideas I'd be glad to try them.
There is something very strange with this machine/my setup of it....
I have spent all day changing code-pages for both keyboard and windows and each time sending myself @ compuserve a test message to
see what I get...I've sent 11 using different combinations
So far I have received only 1 email over there - the one I sent as a starter before changes
Machine is a Dell inspirion 8600 purchased in LA and thus
A) has a USA laptop keyboard (which loses 2 keys if set to eng-uk)
B) set up over there using USA Windows XPPro - and I was not given the XPPro CDs
C) lent to me over here in UK to program for the owner - min effect has become mine pro-tem
D) I of course set language to eng uk for windows but can't do so for keyboard (see A - one of the 'lost' keys is a programmer
frequent)
E) for a variety of reasons I have to use Office 2003 - and in particuar Outlook
F) I have tried EUDORA - but as a freebie I can't get it to send with ease (and I know at least 3 other people over here with that
problem)
G) tried THUNDERBIRD and am not that fond of it
H) like AGENT
If all else fails I'll get another address just for the game - maybe a gmail one would do, I think one can use gmail via a pop3
client
Any advice appreciated - only condition is that it has to be not a web-browser based solution

I have my doubts about this being a keyboard issue, and frankly the keyboard would be the same between gmail and any other mail account. What ISP are you using, and have you looked at their directions?

I printed off the headers of one of John's messages and one
of Judy's. and I couldn't see any relevant difference
between them.

Thanks for coming back to me.....
I just do not uunderstand... The issue is that Dodi uses Tapcis or Ozwin and both of them (well Oz certainly ) makes attachments if
something odd on the encoding or something...
I have set this Outlook up to only send plaintext under any circumstances - and yet.... Private messages to either myself (ozwin -
for I am testing using my old compuserve email account) or Dodi are attachments
I have set Eudora up to use courier font and - yes.... Private messages to self are still atachments
The funny thing is that anything via yahoo/cory is apparently OK for Dodi although my own messages reflect back (- ie come back from
Cory) to me in proportional font.
I can find no more settings to make in Outlook. I have played with all the available settings in Windows that I can think of.
My ISP is ntlworld which I have never ever actually logged into to collect mail - maybe I ought to! For Tim uses it successfully -
so that is next port of call

That's sure strange, John. I know nothing about Outlook, but setting it for plaintext only should be enough. Perhaps someone else can jump in and provide more help.
