Here (after a bit of delay - I hope everyone finally got through!) are a slew of defs for ZOPE -- of which kindly vote for two before Sunday night at 8 p.m. EDT. Thanks!


1. a fast Spanish folk dance in triple time.

2. To roughen (a surface) slightly, as before applying paint.

3. a conical spire atop a stupa.

4. A ring or label on the leg of a bird

5. an African weaver-bird

6. A European fresh-water bream

7. [Slang] wishful thinking.

8. a South African burrowing rodent

9. In phonetics, any long vowel sound.

10. a ridge along the stamen of certain flowers.

11. any microscopic organism, esp. one found in water.

12. an ointment for cuts and burns. [Obs.]

13. a one passenger sled.

14. Any of the spaces between two triglyphs on a Doric frieze.

15. in logic, a circular tautology, as, "A or not-A, unless B or not-B." [G. _xope_, "denial"]

16. Andesitic gravel often found along weathered volcanic extrusions in the Cascade Range of North America.

17. One of a set of parallel cords or wires in a loom used to separate and guide the warp threads and make a path for the shuttle.

I've boiled it down to four possibilities. I'll try #3 and #16.

It's probably one of the other two.

Or more likely none of the above.
