Wow! Didn't think ANY animal got that bright red, this side of the subtropics!

I was thinking maybe a salamander.... but this certainly is exactly what was described!

The skinks I've seen on our property here in Calif. have all had bright blue
heads. I've never seen one with a red head. I wonder if they change with the
time of year.

Guerri, there are redheaded skinks in South Carolina too: the broadhead skink (http://www.uga.edu/srelherp/lizards/eumlat.htm) is probably what you're seeing.

They may change with the seasons or with age, for that matter. Since
posting my message, I haven't seen any. I hope to see another and have a
chance to look more closely, but usually they dart away and hide.

Probably is a broadhead skink. While casually searching around, that's
the only one that seemed likely. According to the article you cited,
they are more common in coastal areas. We live near the mountains.
Still, the ones I've seen are distinctly red-headed; very striking.
