Thanks Dan, I was beginning to think I'd have to quit playing. It all
sounded much to complicated for me.

If you are filtering on the [Dixonary] in the subject line, you won't have
to change a thing. The new group will use that prefix.

If you're filtering on email address, simply redirect messages from
Dixonary (AT) googlegroups (DOT) com to that same folder. And you're done.

> An alternative for me would be to set up a Google Email account

If you wish to do so, by all means do so. :)

I am filtering on [Dixonary] in the subject line and not my Email
address in the To line. Not sure why I had the latter other than to
filter out items that for some reason had the former yet were addressed
to me.

As far as setting up a Google Email account for this, I have been
considering it because from time to time there is a glitch with my
tapcis.com Email. This may not matter so much to Google, but Yahoo zaps
me by shutting off the automatic message delivery and sometimes I don't
find that out right away.

OK-- I joined. What does "private" mean, if you can join without an invite?

I have temporarily changed the group to publicly joinable. It will return
to being private soon enough -- as in, when I get around to it. It's not
listed in the directory, though, so people won't randomly find us and join.

Dan, I was reluctant to join using my regular Email address without
knowing how Google might use that information. If I were to use my
regular Email address to set up the "account" for the group, would that
Email address be used ONLY for the group? I assume so, but I don't know
for sure whether Google might use it for special promotions, etc. having
nothing to do with the group.

I don't think you need to be concerned about that, Guerri. Google is pretty good on that sort of privacy thing. Here's the link for the Google groups privacy policy:

Google doesn't use your email address for anything untoward. Or send
spam. Or send ads. I can even remove the ugly footer from list
messages (although leaving the default 4-line one with unsubscribe
info is still much better than the 14-line Yahoo footer!)

Your email address, when quoted from the website, is hidden in a
similar manner to Yahoo's, e.g. I would appear as wid... (AT) gmail (DOT) com.
(No guarantees when group members post/quote to the list from external
email clients, but list messages are only visible to group members and
on tapcis.com like the current cory setup.)

I haven't gone back to pursue joining and experimenting. Initially it
seemed that one would have to set up an "account" and if using an
existing Email address, would then use a new password for the Google
account. The way you can sign up for, say, Amazon. At least I always use
a different password from the one I use for the Email account itself. So
I may go ahead and sign up using my existing Email account and see what
happens. There have been delivery problems with it when the tapcis.com
Email had some kind of temporary glitch, resulting in Yahoo turning off
message delivery. Don't know how Google will react to those glitches but
I may as well try it and see what happens.

There's no need to go to any effort unless you wish it. I will
manually add people eventually. I'm not sure how that will treat
passwords...

I think that's the preferred method if you want a profile, to be able
to log in on the web, etc. Similar to "joining" Yahoo! However, it's
also possible to just add an email address if all you're doing is
getting email delivery.

Google groups does monitor "bouncing" but I haven't seen it in action
long enough to see if it's a bit more forgiving than Yahoo!'s.

I only joined a google group for a short time many months ago, so I don't remember if it is possible to join a group without having any google ID.

However, if you do get a google ID sooner or later *and* if you do use that ID to login to some google service or other, then that will put a cookie on your disk.

If the cookie remains on your disk and you subsequently go to google to do a web seach, google will probably use that cookie to track your searches to help narrow the search results (esp. text ads) to be more applicable to your inclinations as indicated by your previous searches.

If you deem this to be a privacy issue for you, you may opt out by going to an appropriate web page on google. You might also set your browser to erase cookies every time you close it (of course this could be an inconvenience for your online banking, unless the erasure is domain specific).

BTW, google mail is my main email, but I access it by (secure) POP3, thus there is no cookie unless I login via web (which I sometimes do to clean out spam folder).

I erase cookies and other stuff periodically and I have had no trouble
logging in to places that want to give me a cookie. I may have to enter
a little extra information but so far it's not a problem.

I'll experiment with joining the Google group soon.
