View Full Version : [Dixonary] Moving to Googlegroups

Rather than continue the Googlegroup discussion under the poll results
thread, I've decided to start a new one with a more appropriate
subject line.

I spent an hour or so creating the appropriate page links on the
Google group to current/old file sections. It seems quite workable
as-is. Those who have already joined the google group are encouraged
to check it out and/or suggest changes/improvements. We can leave it
as is for the time being (with players maintaining the database,
statistics, and other historical files here) and as time goes on,
incrementally move some selected content over to the new site. My
guess is that Google will eventually add folders to the file section
(the number one requested feature on the discussion boards), but that
could be anywhere from a day to a year. And really, it's only a
headache for the site managers. Users can ignore the "files" section
and just read the lovely HTML "pages" which direct them to the
appropriate location in the file structure (or lack thereof).

Bottom line for players who don't care about all the technical mumbo jumbo:

- Email only users: the only change you'll see from the current setup
is that the address for posting to the group will change. And
hopefully more reliable email delivery!

- Tapcis.com users: the change should be nearly transparent to you.

- Website users: a new look and feel.

The next steps for moving:

1. Work with Judy and get a google groups echo going with the
tapcis.com website.

2. Once that is done, run a sample round with volunteers who have
already joined the group.

3. Once that is successful, migrate all members from this list to the
new list and choose an official time to switch (ideally between
rounds!)

Just let me know the necessary info and we'll get a test going. All I need is the email address to which messages would be sent to be posted to the Google group, and to have a test address from Tapcis joined as a Google group member (so that messages would be sent TO that address).

Some of us may have a little more to do. For example, I have a filter
that delivers all my Dixonary messages, received from the Yahoo group,
to a separate folder. I might have to change that filter.

An alternative for me would be to set up a Google Email account (and I
have some unused invitations for that) and have the messages delivered
to that account, which can in turn be read by my Email client and placed
in the appropriate folder.

I assume I'd have time to join the Google group myself and establish the
Email address to which messages should be sent. And if I (or anyone
else) did that, you would not then migrate me/us from the Yahoo group.

Hi Dan,

I've tried to join the group as well, but I was unable to find it. Did I
miss a URL in one of the many messages on this subject?

Best, Hugo (not participating in the game ATM, but still reading)

A further note especially for Hugo and Johnny: you can't see anything
within the group without "signing in" which requires you to have a
Google "account". It looks like you would set up such an account using a
current Email address with a password especially for Google, similar to
setting up an online account for various other entities. I didn't pursue
this myself.

Interesting side note: on the page to sign up, there is a request for a
"Nick name". I thought nickname was all one word and so does my dictionary.

Interesting side note 2: I just noticed that to me, at least, all my
messages are time-stamped an hour ahead of my real time. I'm guessing
this happened because I manually changed the time when we went on
Daylight Savings Time, and then my computer changed it again at the old
changeover date.

Hi Guerri,

Thanks for the link, and the additional info. I have now joined the group as
well.

Best, Hugo

Folks, if/when you join, please use your "full name" as your
"nickname". It's what shows up on the "From:" address line.

If you've joined with a shorter nickname, you can easily change it
from the web interface by clicking "Edit my membership."
