Wang hurt; Pettitte resumes throwing (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-yankees-injuries&prov=ap&type=lgns)
March 23, 2007

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Yankees right-hander Chien-Ming Wang (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7502/) felt discomfort in his right hamstring during light running Friday.

Wang, who tied for first in the AL with 19 wins last season, underwent treatment afterward, and Yankees manager Joe Torre was hopeful the injury wasn't serious.

Mike,

Relax. It's just a Spring Training tweak. Not even a pulled hamstring, just a cramp. He'll be fine. (As Petitte is now too!)

Judy,

Really? Then I'd better put on my fake doctor's outfit and run on down to Tampa to make my diagnosis. (That should put you at ease, no?)

Hmmm... putting it that way...

Judy,

Uh-huh... But really, I think the pitching staff is in much better shape than last year what with Rasner and Karstens both doing very well in Spring Training. And that is not even counting all the arms that Cashman got his hands on in the offseason. And Sean Hean is looking like the real deal (it's early, but...) as the leftie coming out of the bullpen. Myers no longer is the only lefthander they can count on and that is a good thing as he can't really do more than pitch to one or two batters at a time.

Wang, Moose, Petitte, Pavano, Igawa, with Karstens and Rasner waiting ready to go and 3 or 4 more young pitchers waiting in the wings for their chance and that is not even counting Hughes.

Wang to start season on DL; Pavano could pitch opening day (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-yankees-wanginjured&prov=ap&type=lgns)
March 24, 2007

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- With Chien-Ming Wang (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7502/) headed to the disabled list, Carl Pavano (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5945/) could end up being the New York Yankees (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/nyy/)' opening-day starter.

Wang, a 19-game winner last year and runner-up for the AL Cy Young Award, will begin the season on the DL with a right hamstring injury. He is expected to be sidelined at least a month. Andy Pettitte (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5331/) has been bothered by back spasms and the Yankees don't want to rearrange Mike Mussina (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/4715/)'s schedule late in spring training, so the oft-injured Pavano appears to be the most likely candidate to pitch April 2 against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/tam/) at Yankee Stadium.

Mike,

Worst prognosis of all the injured Yankee pitchers. Inside of elbow. He could be out indefinitely or worse.

SIGH. What is with the Yankees? Is there a black cloud permanently sitting over top of their pitching mound?

I'm afraid to say anything good about any of the other potential starters for fear of finding out that they too have gone on the DL.

Andy Pettitte (back spasms) threw a bullpen session, Chien-Ming Wang (hamstring) is feeling better, Jeff Karstens (elbow) is not injured and might even make the Opening Day roster, and Kei Igawa simply pitched well.

Judy,

I wouldn't jump with joy about Karstens, Wang or Petitte just yet. Cashman's lucky that Rasner has done so well this spring and the good news is that none of the early spring injuries are major here, so they all should come straggling back in realtively short order. (I hope!)

Judy,

Rasner stunk. 4 2/3's innings: 9 hits, 7 runs, 2 bb, 2 so.

But it is worse than that. He never got out of the 5th inning. A home run, followed by a ground rule double to deep right, a single, then a triple, followed by a soft single. FIVE runs in one inning and this without counting the 2 runs he gave up in the 2nd inning.

SIGH

Silver lining? Sean Hean did 1 1/3 scoreless innings. And Farnworth closed it out without giving up anything in the 9th. (But Villone and Bruney both stunk up the joint inbetween. Villone is not going to make the roster I predict with Hean replacing him. Don't know about Bruney.)

Judy,

Well for pitchers, in general, the regular season is better. Most pitchers can't command their pitches at the start of the season. Don't know what it was with Rasner last night though.

And Hughes is not even close to being ready.

Let's hope they get it together, because the rotation is as follows. Carl Pavano (R) will be the opening day starter, followed by Andy Pettitte (L), Mike Mussina (R), Kei Igawa (L) and Darrell Rasner (R).

It looks like Karstens goes on the DL.

Somehow the acceptance of studpidity trumps the advocacy of sophistication.

Mike,

Rasner was O.K. last year as a spot starter. About the same as Karstens as I remember (without looking closely at stats). Don't think he'll get very many starts at all, unless he comes out and wins big in his first time out in a real game.

Meanwhile some guy named C. Wright tossed the last Grapefruit league game for the Yankees and gave up 3 runs in 6 innings? Who is this guy?'
