We have a good crop of definitions for your entertainment,
possibly even enlightenment! I find it hard to believe that
one of the 19 really does come from a dictionary.

Vote for TWO definitions, as a public forum message (in
reply to this one), before the deadline, which is 2 pm UTC
on Friday 26th, 9 am on the East Coast and 6 am on the West
Coast, a little over 36 hours from now to make things
easier for those on the other side of the world.

New players are welcome, even if you didn't enter a
definition this round. Don't look in a dictionary. Full
rules, if you're curious, are in the file "The Rules of
Dixonary.txt" in the library of the Coryphaeus Yahoo group.

1: [obs.] a pauper.

2: an instructor at an ashram.

3: a hand-woven African silk fabric.

4: [Hind.] perfume (lit. "smelly water").

5: a state of depression or low spirits.

6: in Hindu cosmology, the third celestial house.

7: an Islamic school usually attached to a mosque.

8: a type of Russian nesting doll [dim. Matroshka].

9: light-colored stone chips used in hydraulic cement.

10: [OE] mattress (from German: Matratze, Dutch: Matras).

11: a strongly curved scimitar with a pronounced yelmen.

12: a light, soft, crusty bread made with yeast and eggs.

13: an Indian soldier formerly serving under British
command.

14: an Indian garment similar to a vest, often worn over a
sari.

15: a leguminous forage crop that enriches the soil with
nitrogen.

16: a long-necked glass vessel with a round or oval body,
used for distilling etc.

17: to make-up a bed for a guest [orig. to turn a matress
to get the smooth side on top].

18: the debris which accumulates around the partially
submerged roots of mangrove trees.

19: a cotton cloth of southern India, usually woven with
brightly coloured check patterns.

Best wishes,

I vote for 13 and 14.

I tried to vote for "best wishes" but it had no number.

I'll go with #4, the perfume, and #6, the third celestial house.

1 for simplicity, and 11 for "yelmen."

I'll try 5 and 11.

I don't think it's any of them, but will vote for 11 and 18, because I like
the idea of a pronounced yelmen, and because they have to call the junk
around mangrove roots _something_.

So that's 11 and 18, please.

I'll go with the following, No. 10 because it's too obvious and probably no
one else will vote for it. <G>

1: [obs.] a pauper.
>
> 10: [OE] mattress (from German: Matratze, Dutch: Matras).

Way too many Indian defs. I'll go for 5 and 12.

Since all of the defs seem to have been made out of whole cloth, I'll take the
fabrics: 3 and 19, please.

I'll try #16 and #18, please.
