Randy Johnson was bought by the Yankees at such an outrageous price... and delivered essentially nothing for the money. So buh-bye, Randy; it's back to the D'Backs with you... and the Yanks seem back to basics:

In shedding Johnson two months after trading outfielder Gary Sheffield, the Yankees have jettisoned two expensive players with lengthy résumés who failed to bring a World Series title to the Bronx. In return, they have helped restock a farm system that is suddenly flourishing.It's about time.

The idea that the Yankees would have a paltry farm system is a relatively new concept for the richest of all the baseball franchises. It came about under The Principal Owner's stewardship and motto of "Win now with high-priced talent." Finally its rationale is fading along with Da Boss.

You can't buy for a season or two what the farm system produced with, say, the likes of Andy Pettite... The whole notion was not even as good as penny-wise and pound-foolish. It was just plain foolish.
