View Full Version : [Dixonary] Server reflection times and delays

Folks,

this is a hard one to unwrap. Woulod one of our 'techies' like to
comment, explain, tell me some esoteric setting to use in TB (or maybe
throw their hands up in despair<g>)

At the moment I am running both Outlook and ThunderBird. (both set to
poll the servers every 3 minutes and both set to leave messages on
server - and I tidy that up daily)

My own 'offerings' are reflected back to outlook maybe immediately but
definitely on next poll, but the same message can take up to 5 hours to
arrive at TB.

That is strange... but what is even more alarming is that I can have a
conversation on Outlook with someone and the 'threadlet' - ie both sides
of the conversation which by definition does appear in Outlook else it
wouldn't be a conversation - does not appear on TB (even when I 'cheat'
and send my side from TB.

I have tried only having one of the two loaded, I have tried allowing
each to collect messages and *not* leave on server... but the figures
are about correct
Something that occurs almost instantly on Outlook can take several hours
to happen on TB

Comments please

JohnnyB
PS. (I'd hate to have to say that Redmond got something right<grin>)

Glad you see this too. Thought it was just me...

In Eudora 1.5.4 (of 1995) -- and my school email account -- i send
messages, immediately retrieve messages, and the ones i posted to the
list already come back. Occasionally the (say) 5th of 5 isn't there yet
but a pass 10 seconds later gets it.

In Thunderbird 0.7.3 (of 2004) -- and my gmail account -- i send
messages, half an hour later they still don't come back. Half a day
later, next time i go online, yes they are there.

I *thought* it was gmail being funny, thank you for drawing my attention
to the fact that it could be a T'bird thing.

Seeing as an ancient Eudora gets it right too it may be more a question
of T'bird doing something stupid rather than Redmond doing something
particularly wonderful <g>.

I've never had my outgoing mailing list messages come back to me in
TBird. I believe it's the way they set up (or perhaps I set up) my
pop3 and gmail access. I think gmail keeps track of mailing list
messages you send as outgoings, and doesn't count them as incoming
messages when they come from the list. I decided it's probably
because of the way gmail tracks "conversations" and have learned to
live with it.

I just tested this myself. I am using Tbird, and have the messages
posted in the Coryphaeus group sent to me by Email to my tapcis.com
Email address. I have Tbird set to check for mail every 30 minutes, but
after sending off my latest messages, I did something else for about 7
minutes, then asked Tbird to get my mail. The messages that I'd written
were reflected back to me by then.

Are there always long delays for you, or just sometimes? I have never
paid attention, since I usually read and send mail, then log off. So my
test may have been a random event, and it may be that sometimes messages
take hours to reflect back to me, and I just don't notice it.

... Meanwhile back to your question... I reckon it may have something to do with location of servers etc and maybe local setups etc.
etc. Quite definitely, even via closing down and coming back up TBird seems to have a delay of <usually> 4 to 5 hours for anything
imnvolved in this complex of Tapcis.com and yahoo/coryphaeus. It looks as though Marijke over here in UK is seeing something similar
with TBird.

No such delay occurs with Outlook.

However, it isn't only 'the game' setup.
1. Tbird does not appear to send stuff to someone down the road at speeds I am used to from Outlook and Ozwin (and gmail). I send
and receive stuff to/from my wife at work as I support her software. With anything else other than Tbird I can be talking on the
telephone and say 'I have just sent xyz' and she will respond within 30 seconds - 'got it' ... Not if I send with Tbird... Tbird
firstly takes nearly a minute to connect and send according to its transfer dialog (I'm on braodband) and secondly it looks like it
takes about 15 minutes to go that half mile. (does it send it via the USA? See next) - this has happened about 3 times this last
week. I have had to stop using Tbird for that support job, the whole point is to 'talk-through' the email.

2. Tbird sends Transatlantic quicker than that, I actually had the experience of being on phone and sending to someone in the USA
(St Louis; Mo) - it arrived there within 3 minutes!!! This is a one-off experience

3. Tbird seems loth to do transatlantic back to me at about the 4-5 hour rate... Because that transfer to USA was so fast I asked
him (on the phone) to reply 'got it' - that reply was mre than 4 hours. Again a one-off experience

SO: trying to put all that together, it looks as though something strange is happening via routing with Tbird and - at least for me,
somewhere in the route is a slow link or bottleneck. I suspect it is some setting in Tbird that I haven't yet discovered. My first
try is to uninstall and reinstall and specifically state that I am not prepared to tell them about problems - just in case that
involves a monitoring and thus routing through Mozilla sites... But don't hold your hat.... I have other things to do for at least
the next week and for the time being Tbird just will not be used.

I considered that --- and was prepared to have to merge my Sent box in
with dixonary to restore the threading --- but mine *do* come back.
Eventually. They just go for a pizza on their way and take a five hour
shortcut through the park.
